Here we have the “Magnificat”—the Song of Mary (1 :4 6 ); the “Benedictus”—the Song o f Zacharias (1 :6 7 ); the “ Nunc Dimittis” —the Song o f Simeon ( 2 :29) ; the “Ave Maria”—the Angel’s salutation (1 :2 8 ); and the “Gloria in Excelsis”—the Song of the Angels (2:14). 5. A Gospel for the Poor and the Out­ cast. Humble Mary is chosen (1 :3 2 ); Christ is born o f poor parents, and cradled in a manger (2 :7 ); the humble shepherds hear the good news (2 :1 5 ); He came to evan­ gelize the poor (4:16-18), the “poor, maimed, blind, and halt,” are called (14:21) ; the poor are to be invited to our feasts (14 :12); Lazarus, the beggar, is seen in Abraham’s bosom (16:22) ; an out­ cast thief is taken into the glory (23:42). 6 . It is the Universal Gospel. Luke extends the prophecy o f Isaiah so that “ all flesh” see the salvation o f God ( 3 :6) ; the pedigree is carried beyond Abra­ ham and Pavid (Jewish) back to Adam (the father o f the race) ( 3 :37) ; Christ is enrolled äs a citizen o f the Roman Empire (2 :l-7) ; He is a light for the “ Gentiles,” and His salvation is for “ all peoples” ( 2 :31, 32) ; Luke records the sending o f the 70—Gentile nations, as 12—Jewish (1 0 :1 ); Elijah is sent to a heathen widow (4:26) ; Naaman the Syrian is cleansed ( 4 :27) ; the gratitude o f the Samaritan is recorded (17:17, 18) ; the parable o f the good Samar­ itan is here (10:28-36). Jesus refuses to call down fire upon the city o f the Samari­ tans (9:54, 56 ); the publican is accepted and the Pharisee rejected (18:9-14); and Christ abides with Zaccheus, the outcast publican (19:1-10). 7 . The Gospel of Wealth. Note emphasis laid on wealth, its use and abuse; cf. 6:24, 25; 12:13-34 (rich

fool) ; 14:12-14; c. 16 (unjust steward, rich man and Lazarus); 18:22-30 with 19:10 (unsaved and saved rich) ; 23:50-53 with Matthew 27:57. F. FEATURES PECULIAR TO LUKE The following miracles are peculiar to the gospel o f Luke and are not found in any o f the other gospels: the miraculous draught o f fishes (5 :4-11) ; the raising o f the widow’s son at Nain (7:11-18); the woman with the spirit o f infirmity (13:11- 17 ); the, man with the dropsy (14:1-6) ; the healing o f the ten lepers (17:11-19); and the healing o f ,the high priest’s ser­ vant (22:50, 51). The parables peculiar to Luke and not found in the other gospels are: the two debtors ( 7 :41-43.); the good Samaritan (10:25-37); the importunate friend (11:5- 8) ; the rich fool (12:16-21); the barren fig tree (1 3 :6-9) ; the lost piece o f silver (15:8-10); the prodigal son (15:11-32); the unjust steward (16:1-13) ; the rich man and Lazarus (16:19-31); the unjust judge (18:1-8) ; the Pharisee and the pub­ lican (18:10-14).
