THE KING’S BUSINESS

but also well remembered; On calling a second time on Mr. L., a Jewish store keeper, the worker was told that a little paper which he had left on a former visit was a very foolishly written' story; in fact, it was a most absurd thing, and from a missionary standpoint the worker was advised never to use that particular paper in trying to influence other Jews. Curious to know what tract it was, though the storekeeper had said it would do more harm than good, yet it seemed to have made a very profound impression on him, the worker asked him to describe it. He said it was a story o f the war—Spanish- American he guessed—and by that the worker knew he had reference to the tract entitled, “The Dying Drummer Boy.” That it had made a profound impression on him was evident from the fact that he repeated its contents far better than the worker himself could have done. Can we believe that a tract that carries such a good mes sage to a Jew, and that was so carefully O UR work at Yokefellows’ Hall for the last month has been blessed in exper ience and definite results. Street meetings have been held alternately at two different corners, at which we have always been encouraged, many times seeing visible evi dences o f God’s promise that “ My W ord shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” At the close o f the evening service in the hall recently, a stranger came in who, before leaving, knelt and accepted the Saviour, to Whom his mother had sought to lead him on her deathbed, seven years before; her strength failed, and he was ! continuing through life, lost and losing, until the “laborers-few” brought the Gos pel and the opportunity for decision—God answering the mother’s prayer. Another stranger came in at the close of one o f our Sunday afternoon Bible

read and well remembered would, as he said, ■ “ do more harm than good ?” On the contrary, would it not accomplish all God intended ? As “all is not gold that glitters,” neither is all apparent scepticism true scepticism, but is often only a cloak for inward con viction. Especially is this true when deal ing with a descendant o f Jacob. At a recent Hebrew convention in this city, a committee was appointed to further the plans for a propospd Jewish colony to be established near Los Angeles. Accord ing to the Hebrew-Christian Alliance o f America, there are three million wretchedly pauperized Jews in Europe, awaiting the end o f this awful conflict to join their rela tives in the United States. Many o f these are expected to colonize here, which will mean not only added opportunities for service, but also increased responsibility. Let us make this colony a matter o f defi nite prayer. , Acting Supt. classes, and aftei* he had been dealt with he said to the worker, “ I thank you for what I have received; I didn’t come for this, but you have helped me; I came for something to eat.” Before leaving, he accepted a Gospel o f John, and went out a returned back-slider, determined by the Grace o f God to reach some o f his former friends on board ship. Only last night, as we were closing Bible chapter and prayer before going out on the street with a Jewish man, converted through one o f our students, the Lord brought in a man probably 70 years o f age. The old gentleman remained in the hall while we were out at the street work. W e personally sought to satisfy his hun- ger by the AYord, in the Spirit, giving him a portion o f the Bible to take away. He left after prayer, yielded, by God’s help, for service to lay up some treasure during the remaining years, days or hours which, in God’s grace, may be allotted to him.
