(6) When Barnabas added' Saul he divided his' work and multiplied his useful­ ness. (7) True sympathy does not end with sentiment, but in service. (8) You cannot kill the seed by cutting down the stalk. (9) If we had more fasting in the church, we would have less need o f feasting. (10) Fasting and prayer have largely gone out o f fashion in the church, and so has fellowship with God, and .power from above. (11) The Holy Spirit appoints and • anoints, and whom He thrusts forth, He thoroughly fills.

Was there some virtue imparted by the hands o f the men who fasted and prayed? 2 Tim. 1:6. PRACTICAL PO INTS (1) The devil’s persecution was overruled by Divine ,Providence. (2) Persecution did not stop the preaching o f the Gospel, but gave zest to its publication. (3) When the hand o f the Lord is upon the preacher there will be a heavy harvest o f people. (4) The malice o f the Jews was made to minister mercy to the Gentiles. (5) When the grace \>f God is manifest, the heart o f man is glad.

Nevertheless much mischief came from Mark forsaking his post o f duty at this time. v. 14. “But when they departed (But they passing through) from Perga, they (omit, they) came to Antioch in Pisidia, and (add, they) went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and sat down.” Paul always sought the synagogue on the Sab­ bath, i. e., on the Jewish seventh day Sab­ bath. His reason for doing this was not because he himself felt that the seventh day Sabbath was still binding upon Chris­ tians (cf. Col. 2:16, 17), but because that was the day on which the people he wished

v. 13. "Now when (omit , when) Paul and his company loosed (set sail ) from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing ( departed ) from them (add, and) returned to Jerusalem.” The John here mentioned was John Mark, that is,-the Mark who wrote the second gospel (ch. 15:37-39), Missionary work was too hard for Mark and so he forsook his post o f duty. But the day came when Mark did better and stayed with Paul even when others forsook him (Col. 4:10), and was a real help to Paul (2 Tim. 4:11).
