Joe Sacco, Page 12-13 from“The Fixer” (2009 [2003])

The Art of the News is the first major retrospective devoted to the increasingly influential genre of visual narrative, comics journalism. The exhibition spotlights the groundbreaking work of author-artist Joe Sacco, a foundational figure in the field—and a graduate of the UO. Accompanying Sacco’s work are key pieces from an international group of artists who have developed comics journalism and are pushing the genre in new directions, including Gerardo Alba, Dan Archer, Thi Bui, Tracy Chahwan, Jesús Cossio, Sarah Glidden, Omar Khouri, Viktoria Lomasko, Sarah Mirk, Ben Passmore, Yazan al-Saadi, and Andy Warner. https://jsma.uoregon.edu/ComicsJournalism The Art of the News Comics Journalism On view from September 24, 2021 to January 16, 2022

Curated by Katherine Kelp-Stebbins, Professor of Comic Studies, UO Department of English, in consultation with Ben Saunders, Professor of Comics Studies, UO Department of English.

Amanda Snyder remains one of Oregon’s most highly regarded and collected mid-century artists. She explored a wide range of subject matter and frequently experimented with new ideas in art-making throughout her long career. A distinguishing characteristic of Snyder's work is her use of scumbling, a technique of laying down and scraping away multiple layers of paint, building up a richly textured and complex paint surface fromwhat remains. Snyder's paintings of birds are often poignant and tender, and her groupings of birds can be dynamic and communicative of human concerns. Her work is held in many distinguished public and private collections, and the Portland Art Museum presented a retrospective exhibition of her work in 2012.
