Everyone ’ s voice matters. YOUR story can make positive change. How can you make a difference? Lobby Day is proof that your voice can make an impact. Join the Political Action Committee (PAC) at the state capitol and share your story in front of Washington State’s Lawmakers to advocate for bills that will make positive change in our community and the CWU campus. Lobby Day The Governmental Affairs Office gives interested students a free trip to Olympia to speak directly to government officials in our capitol February 8-9. Students are given five minutes in front of lawmakers to voice their concerns, tell their stories and advocate for change. If you’re reading this and thinking your story doesn't matter, last Lobby Day the Washington State Legislature passed several bills and funding that have made real changes here on campus, thanks in part to the brave students who shared their truth. One of the changes already happening is the development of a new Multicultural Center!

The week was chosen to extend the celebrations commonly held for the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, men who made sizable leaps towards the abolishment of slavery and equal rights for all. Woodson wanted to expand it beyond the study and celebration of these two men, however. He believed that history was created by the people, and wanted the celebration to reflect that. With sponsorship from the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), he drew attention to the great minds which had acquired freedom for a large portion of the U.S. population. Before long, the celebration had grown to include experiences and lessons both inside and outside of schools, and would provide a springboard for the civil rights movement. By the mid-to-late 20th century, Black History Month was adopted by college campuses, and then widely by the general public. Since 1976, U.S. president have endorsed ASALH's yearly theme for Black History Month. This year is African Americans and the Arts.

Story by Mercer Akeson Design by Katrina Nolan

With recent years riddled with political turmoil and the search for social justice, Black History Month brings celebration, education, and recognition for many voices who have been disparaged, past and present. The tradition began in 1926 with historian Carter G. Woodson, with a celebration he called “Negro History Week.”

Winter can be magical. Falling snow, holiday movie nights, and amazing food are just the tip of the iceberg. The harsh Ellensburg weather may get you down at times, but OPR is here to keep the magic alive. Whether you’re a snow fanatic or prefer to stay warm indoors, OPR has treks, trips and clinics to keep you moving and having fun this season. OPR is a rental equipment shop at the Student Union and Recreation Center [SURC]. Outside of rentals, OPR hosts numerous trips and clinics to give students the opportunity for adventure, to learn something new, and become comfortable and confident in new experiences.

Staying Inside: So, maybe layering up and shredding powder isn’t your jam. That’s okay. OPR has indoor activities and clinics to keep you moving throughout the winter season. Climbing Wall: If you’ve ever been to the Recreation Center, you may have

noticed a climbing wall. Bouldering and top rope climbing is the perfect way to stay active while not having to worry about the cold weather. OPR offers clinics to all students, at any skill level. You won’t want to miss the Ropeless Rodeo, Central’s annual bouldering competition, on January 27. This event is open to all experience levels and an amazing way to meet fellow climbers from all around the PNW.

Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga: Want to enjoy an evening on the water but cold weather has you down? Find your zen at paddle board yoga in the CWU Aquatics Center. Give yourself time to relax this season; you deserve it.

10

Moonlight Snowshoe: Walk through a winter wonderland with a moonlight glow! Cross Country Ski Trip: Head to the Cascade Mountains for a group cross country skiing adventure. Snow Tubing: Keep the winter magic alive with this classic winter past-time.

Moonlight Cross Country Ski: Hit the cross country trails by the light of the full moon – it’s an adventure of a lifetime! This is just the beginning of what OPR has in store for us this quarter. Look for more details on the Recreation website or stop by the OPR shop.

Trips To The Outdoors: Let’s be honest, for snowboarders and skiers, winter is your paradise. The blanket of snow that covers our landscape transforms a bare mountain into your playground. If you want to make time to hit the slopes, OPR has some amazing trips you’re going to want to join.
