Consumers Respond To Private Label by Greg Kishbaugh A mcor has released the results of a recent survey that finds private label products have become increasingly popular in European households, with 70 percent of consumers incor- porating these products into their grocery shopping routines. The study, based on responses from more than 3,000 gro- cery shoppers in six European countries, highlights the

The AICC Annual Meeting kicked off with a Focus Session that includ- ed the State of the Industry address delivered by Timothy Bergwall, Group President of Paper Packag- ing & Services at Greif, Inc. George Staphos, a Managing Di- rector at Bank of America Mer- rill Lynch, followed with a Paper & Packaging Economic Update, equipping participants with the lat- est market trends and financial per- spectives. This affordability-driven shift in buying habits shows no signs of slowing, with 50 percent of con- sumers indicating they will continue to favor pri- vate labels due to their high satisfaction with prod- uct quality. Although price is a primary motivator, consumers remain unwilling to compromise on quality. The research identified “better taste,” “local production,” and “cleaner ingredients” as the top factors influ- encing quality perceptions. Just more than half of European consumers (51 percent) discern no significant quality difference between private-label and branded products. “While the research confirms that the price of pri- vate-label items impacts grocery shoppers’ purchas- ing decisions in the current economic climate, qual- ity is still a crucial factor influencing consumers’ buying journey,” said Madalina Mitru, Strategic Mar- keting and Value Chain Manager at Amcor. “Taste, quality and origin are all still important when con- sumers are making purchasing decisions.” The research additionally sheds light on evolving consumer attitudes toward sustainability, particu- larly those concerning retailers and brands. Just more than 40 percent of the consumer re- spondents believe that retailers are making genu-

ine strides in “local production” efforts. One-third of consumers perceive progress in “food waste re- duction,” “less excessive packaging,” and “more sus- tainable packaging”. There remains, however, room for improvement, according to respondents, with 35 percent indicat- ing that retailers need to make more efforts to re- duce excessive packaging and 33 percent expecting more sustainable packaging alternatives. Packaging continues to play a pivotal role in con- sumer choices. Claims such as “recyclable pack- aging,” “less plastic,” “less packaging,” and “paper

Tesa Completes Expansion Of Michigan Facility Tesa has completed an expansion at its facility in Sparta, Michigan. The Sparta facility, established in 1982, was tesa’s first manufacturing site outside of Europe. This investment marks a significant step for tesa in achieving its sustainability agenda, which includes transitioning to solvent-free production in all of its facilities and using bio-based and recycled raw ma- terials, said the company. In addition to solvent-free production, the site now features an expanded Product and Technology Development Lab and a Customer Solution Center where partners can collaborate with tesa to test and develop more sustainable solutions. Strengthening Partnerships This step aims to strengthen tesa’s partnerships with customers and partners in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With the completion of the construction work, the facility now boasts an additional 28,000 square feet of manufacturing space, increasing the total area to more than 40,000 square feet. This new area houses production equipment de- signed with a “zero waste” concept, which is ex- pected to reduce natural gas consumption by ap- proximately 40 percent once the older machinery is permanently decommissioned later this year. The facility also includes a large product devel- opment area, in addition to the new Customer Solution Center. While this phase of construction is complete, another phase is set to begin, which will include the construction of a warehouse. Label Summit Latin America To Return To Colombia The forthcoming 20th edition of Label Summit Latin America will return to Colombia in March 2024 and will take place in Bogotá for the first time. INX International Invests In DetraPel

Engineered Better Anilox Sleeves and Rollers Crafted Specifically For Your Budget, Your Press, Your Job.

INX International Ink Co. has completed an in- vestment in DetraPel, a materials company that manufactures sustainable coatings. This represents the fourth deal closed since the $50M INX Venture Capital investment program was established in 2022. DetraPel is the parent company of the consumer division ProofPlus, and Impermea Materials, its re- cently rebranded industrial arm. Impermea Materi- als is a materials company that provides solutions to drive the next generation of PFAS and plastic-free innovation. Substrate Varieties The solutions include Paper and Paperboard Pack- aging, which offer a variety of substrate technolo- gies such as oil and grease resistance (OGR), mois- ture vapor transmission (MTVR) barriers, adhesives, release coatings and more. These water-based, plas- tic alternatives are FDA compliant (A-H), heat seal- able, and preserve the flexibility and foldability of the substrate. The DetraPel investment focuses on paper and fiber-based packaging and complements Sakata INX’s Ecostage GB-XA oxygen barrier coatings, an offering for films introduced to the market earlier this year. GLS Films Adds Bobst Press, Laminator Since its founding more than two decades ago by Sandeep Goyal and Rajesh Goyal, GLS Films Indus- tries has reportedly grown to become one of In- dia’s largest flexible packaging companies. It caters to a host of industry segments, including food and drinks, FMCG, pharmaceutical, industrial, and agri- culture. The company invested in its first Bobst machine in 2012, the RS 888. Later, the company added the Nova RS 5002, which was installed in 2019. In 2022, it went on to add a Vision RS 5003 press and will soon will be receiving the fourth Vision RS 5003, which has a speed of 400 meters per minute and is suitable for water-based and solvent-based ink. GLS Films has decided to add a second Nova D 800 laminator with flexo trolley. The machine reportedly enables high-speed coat- ing of solvent-based adhesives with high solid con- tent, allowing for 20 percent less adhesive usage with high solid and low coating weight.

No- tably, 28 percent of shoppers cited that more sus- tainable packaging swayed them toward choosing private label products. “We see a growing shift toward eco-conscious gro- cery shopping for both private-label and branded products,” said Mitru. “Consumers increasingly ex- pect their preferred products to demonstrate how they are improving sustainability.
