ASCWU Elections Do you know who makes the decisions on how to allocate the money received from student fees? Or who makes the call to expand buildings on campus? Believe it or not, you play a big part in who does. You can affect the future here at CWU in two different ways: voting or running in the election. Either way, you can make a difference. Be the change. Why Run? So, why would someone want to run? Well, in any of these positions, you get the chance to represent and advocate for students. You will have a hand in making some huge decisions throughout next year: the multicultural center’s future direction, allocating $6 million dollars in student fees to services and activities, making decisions about new and potential student fees, and so much more. On top of that, any one of these positions would be an incredible resume builder. All positions hold great responsibility as they impact the future and current decisions regarding the university. The executive board members are paid for their hard work, up to 24 hours a week, making this a great part-time position as well. Senators are paid up to five hours and the Vice Speaker can work up to 10 paid hours a week. Why Vote? Why would someone want to vote? Your decisions could affect the future of CWU. The people who fill these positions have the ability to influence decisions affecting all CWU students. Voting allows you to voice your opinion on who you want to advocate for your needs.

UNA NOCHE PARA SIEMPRE
APRIL 12 6 P.M. SURC BALLROOM
Clear the date for an evening full of joy and dance! As a way to represent Hispanic culture, MEChA will be hosting an event called “Una Noche Para Siempre” (which translates to One Night, Forever) for the CWU community. The event is also a way to honor and celebrate MEChA’s 52-year history at CWU. The first half of the night will feature cultural dance performances, music, and activities for everyone to enjoy. During the second half of the event, it’s all about getting in the groove and dancing the night away. The event will end by
thanking and acknowledging the groups who worked hard to put the celebration together, and those who have supported MEChA throughout the school year.

BARRIO FIESTA
MAY 3 6-8 P.M. SURC BALLROOM
Barrio Fiesta isn’t just an event, but a community of Filipino cultures hoping to represent and share their traditions. Barrio is hosted by the CWU FASA club here on campus. The president of FASA, Elijah Morales, encourages people from all cultures to join in on the fun while hanging out with friends, and maybe make new long-lasting friendships too. This year, Barrio Fiesta is going to be a larger scale event, and held in the SURC Ballroom. You can expect games, activities, performances from different regions of the Philippines, and the fan favorite: delicious food. Barrio Fiesta is a place where people can come and learn about Filipino culture in a fun and engaging way.
Everyone is welcome regardless of culture. The things you should bring are yourself (friends and loved ones are encouraged), willingness to learn, lots of energy, and I repeat, LOTS OF ENERGY!
One of the joys of PolyFest is the pride it brings to both performers and audience members. The Vice President of PISA, Marissa Mose, understands what this event means to everyone. “Truly, that’s what’s important to people, is to see that authenticity of their own culture that they can resonate with,” says Mose.
PolyFest is an event celebrating Polynesian culture. The Pacific Islander Student Association, or PISA, has the challenging task of representing six regions with their own unique culture: Māori, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti, and Hawaiʻi. This year, the event is going to have as many as 40 to 50 performers! PISA has done extensive research to present authentic dances.

SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY 7:30 AM Check-in begins at Nicholson Arena where you’ll learn more about the day’s activities. 8:30 AM
Spring Into Service When we were younger, Earth Day involved reading The Lorax , watching Friends for Change commercials on Disney Channel, and maybe even planting a tree with our second-grade class. As an adult, it might not seem like such a magical time now that we are old enough to be aware of the environmental damage rapidly affecting our home—but what if we could bring that magic back to life? Grab your work clothes and closed-toe shoes, Wildcats, get ready to make a change and spring into service this Earth Day! What is Spring Day Service? Spring Day of Service is a day when the CWU community teams up with the greater Ellensburg area to clean up and beautify the landscape around us. You will be amazed at how quickly we can make a difference in the communities surrounding CWU. This year, Spring Day of Service falls on Saturday, April 20. Why You Should Volunteer Not convinced yet? This is one of CWU’s biggest events where you can work alongside different clubs, teams, friends, departments, and organizations. This volunteer work does not feel like work when you are creating lifelong connections and friendships with the community around you. Don’t have a friend to go with you? No worries, come alone, and you’ll leave with a free t-shirt, new friends, and a cleaner planet— how much better can it get? The entire day will be spent making memories you will look back on every Earth Day moving forward. Everyone is welcome! If you are looking for an experience where you can walk away feeling like you are better connected to the Ellensburg community, and a true resident of Kittitas County, then this is the perfect Earth Day event for you. Spring Day of Service will have you walking away knowing you did something important and impactful for our planet. We can’t wait to see you there!
Buses depart to 10 different sites throughout Kittitas County.
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Participate in a variety of clean-up projects. 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Return to campus for a free lunch.
You must sign up by April 10 to guarantee a free t-shirt and lunch!

Story by Mercer Akeson Design by Taylor Perez SWEECY DAY When was the last time you slowed down and appreciated where you are in life? Now we all know student life isn’t always easy. It can be overwhelming at times. On the other hand, it can also be exciting, vibrant, and so much fun. Sweecy Day is about slowing down, celebrating yourself, and living in the moment. We only have a few years in this stage of our lives, and it would be a shame if we didn’t celebrate it. History of Sweecy Day The Sweecy Day tradition began in 1947. The name Sweecy comes from the acronym CWSC, which stood for Central Washington State College, Central’s previous name. The day started with a clean-up of campus and the community and ended as one big party. Loaded with fun activities, Sweecy Day had a talent show, pancake breakfast, movie showings, a dance with the coronation of royalty, and so much more. In true Ellensburg fashion, they couldn’t forget our roots: chariot races with energetic crowds and a small-scale rodeo complete with wild steer riding and greased pig chases. While the event was immediately successful and remained throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, it was met with pushbacks in the 1970’s. School administrators feared the event was getting too big and out of control. Both students and community members used Sweecy Day as an excuse to party a little bit too hard. The on- campus ragers destroyed the grounds which they had worked hard to beautify the morning before.
Finally, after many debates between the student council and faculty on whether to keep the event alive, Sweecy Day was discontinued in the late 1970’s, and has been until its revival last year. Taking Back Sweecy Day Our Student Senate deserves credit: they’ve taken an event which used to mean so much to our community and brought it into the new age. At its roots, Sweecy Day is a day to appreciate campus and come together as students. Sometimes, we lose sight of how much freedom we have to do good and feel good. We get stuck in the repetition of every day: wake up, class, work, homework, bed. We sometimes forget to step out of our routine and breathe in some fresh air. Hopefully, Sweecy Day can be just that for you. The day invites us to remember our history and think about how we can improve student life for the present and future.
What to expect at Sweecy Day 2024
While the day was not intended to be named as a combination of Sweet and Spicy, the recent adaptation of the day is just that. It features both work and fun. The schedule will be announced early Spring, but you can expect a tree planting, Wildcat Farm cleanup, live music, a food festival, and a casino night complete with prizes and refreshments.

Along with the sunshine and warm weather, spring quarter brings the freedom to step outside and relax. If you’re new here or have never been shown the ropes, you might not know all the activities and spots the ‘Burg has to offer! Here at Hype, we’ve created a Spring bucket list of the things you must do while you’re still at CWU.
People’s Pond – AKA Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park
Visit Ellensburg’s not-so-secret oasis. Complete with volleyball courts, trails, and the occasional boat race, this is THE destination on a warm spring quarter day. For relaxing, bring a blanket, some sunscreen, and a book. For some fun in the sun, rent a paddleboard from OPR or use the rope swing and get some well-deserved vitamin D! Have a Cuddle with Archie the Dog When you’re on campus this spring, be on the lookout for Archie, our local K9! Archie loves visiting students at the SURC or at campus events, and is open to pets and cuddles! The feel-good pup has been crowned the best law enforcement officer of Kittitas County, and when you see him around, it won’t be hard to understand why!

Watch a Live Performance Entertainment is something Central is not short of. No matter what you are interested in, there is a show you won’t want to miss. Check out our student comedians and actors in the Hot New Jam, Central’s best (and only) improv team! Reserve your tickets now for Central Theatre Ensemble's Spring production of Footloose. Looking for a laid-back night of entertainment? Open Mic Night is hosted in the Holmes Dining Room every month! Enjoy the works of our talented musicians and vocalists at the many recitals and concerts held in the McIntyre Music Building over the quarter. The opportunities for a great night out are endless. Go Take a Hike! What better way to spend spring than with nature? Answer: there isn’t one. Get grounded, get moving, and breathe in some fresh air on a hike. I’ll let you google and find your new favorite spot, or tag along on one of OPR’s great adventures but just promise me you’ll get out of the house and find your inner granola. There were so many times during winter quarter when we wished it was nice enough to go outside, so take advantage now! Curl Up at the Library If you’ve elected for some lighter classes this spring, and don’t have all of those pesky textbooks to read this quarter, don’t let up on those reading habits! Check out The Attic at Brooks Library fourth floor to find a comfy spot.
Celebrate Yourself! There is no better way to celebrate yourself than during Student Appreciation Week. From May 20-23 each day hosts free student events and activities to enjoy. Soak in the sun, snack on free food, and take delight in this week created just for you! You can expect fun activities like an outdoor movie, karaoke, game night, and more leading up to the grand finale: Sweecy Day!
