THE KING’S BUSINESS

How do I know? First by the three fold proof, and then by the threefold pattern. Not by tides of emotion, not by thrills of devotion, not by subjec tive commotion, not by intellectual mo tion, but by these solid, definite, tangi ble realities of obedience, of love, and of the possession of the Holy Spirit, as proved by a life lived as He lived, according to that Divine Pattern, “ See that thou make all things according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount.” When our minds and hearts are thus occupied with Christ, with the pattern that He sets before us, we may be perfectly certain that the Holy Ghost will be at work. In His light we shall see light, and there will be none of the pensiveness and wistful ness which Sir William Robertson Nicoll rightly says characterize mod ern life, but find no place in the New Testament. There is nothing wistful in the New Testament, and there is nothing pensive. It is “ I know” and “ I rejoice.” In proportion as we live along this line, there will be an ever- increasing consciousness of assurance, of power and joy and of blessing, to the everlasting praise of the glory of His grace.
the light, we shall be conscious of sin; and what the light reveals the Blood will cleanse, for “ the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” “Walk, even as He walked” ' (2 :6 ). You see there the inward and the outward aspect of our life, according to the Divine pattern. As He is in the light we are to walk. We are to walk as He walked. Look at the Gospels, and ask yourselves, “ How did He walk?” Unselfishly, lovingly, obediently. Walk as He walked, and you will be living accord ing to the pattern. Secondly, In relation to self. In wardly, “ Purify, even as He is pure” ( 3 :3 ). Outwardly, ‘He that doeth righteousness is righteous even as He is righteous ( 3 :7). So in regard to self, we are to be pure within, and we are to be righteous without, “ even as He.” Now, in relation to others. “ Love one another, as He gave us command ment” (3:23). “ As He is, so are we in this world” (4:17). Thus inwardly and outwardly, in relations to others, to self and to God, we are to walk according to and to live according to this definite pattern. And in this way the answer to our question comes.
