THE KING ’S 'BUSINESS

by distributing tracts, personal conversa tions, etc. He bids fair to make a great worker for God. On December' first the Mission was moved from 608 North Main street, where it has been for over two years, to 639}4 San Fernando street. It is a better location, and we have a better hall. The street meetings are still conducted at the corner of Republic and Main streets. These meetings are gen erally held each evening between 6 and 7 o’clock. Then afterwards we have a short open-air meeting, directly in ■ front of the Mission. During the last year we preached the Gospel to over 13,000 men at that cor ner. Often there has been the best.of at tention. From a civic standpoint alone, we> have been able to do much toward the preservation of law and order. This is recognized by the police department of the city. The indoor attendance at our new location is better than we have ever had before in the work. Work the S. S. James S. Higgins, a hard bunch of men were playing cards in their quarters at the bow of the vessel. •Near the narrow stairway, leading down below, a man was found in the dark, alone, and looking .at the lights of the harbor and the starry heaven. The worker almost passed him, as it* was very dark. This man, a native of Sweden arid a man who had carelessly heard the Gospel many times, saw his need of a Saviour and with a warm hand-shake showed his willingness to then accept Christ. He was never in sympathy with the other fellows in their gambling, being convicted that there was a God, but how to be justified he never really did know. The Word of God settled it for him that night. Mr. R—*—, formerly a miner, and broken down in health, came to San Pedro to re cuperate. A worker.found him and in talk ing to him approached the subject of his salvation.. He was very bitter against his

fellows and raise a ■ riot at the Plaza, and kill right and left until he could thus end his life. But he was îlot able to carry out his plans. We got down on our knees in my study and he poured out his heart to God in confession, with'the tears pouring down his face. He said that he had been watching my life during the past year, and he could not get away from what I told him. All bitterness is taken away, and I be lieve that God will yet use him much to HIS own glory. Another man; accepted the Lord in Sep tember. He went away shortly after. With in a week or so he wrote asking for Bibles and literature, which were sent to him. He came back in about two months from San Francisco, where he was working, and asked to be baptized and received into one of the evangelical churches. Afterwards he returned to his work in San Francisco, from where he writes, frequently telling of the work he is doing there for the Master, Harbor God many times prepares hearts and as the worker is led by His spirit often one verse of Scripture or maybe two will gather a “ripe” fruit. In this instance a young fellow was noticed alone in his cabin, on board one of the vessels, as the worker walked past the ship on the dock. The worker was convicted that he should speak to that young man, so he went aboard. This young fellow, a Lutheran, did not know what the “new birth” meant, although he was a faithful attendant at church when ever possible. “I never heard of it before,” he said, “but I am willing to accept Christ as my personal Saviour.” The worker felt he was sincere and left him to the guidance of God while he was away, hop ing to have the opportunity to tell him more of the Book when he came again. Often the workers pray God may sepa rate individual persons from the bunch of men to do personal work more effectively and the prayer is always answered. On
