to. There was a great Strength to go to —“My help cometh from the Lord.” We cannot get along in our own strength or in the strength of any other human being, but if we are God’s chil dren, we can get our strength from Him. Object Lesson S aved and K ept Objects: Five boxes graduated in size to fit inside each other, a small blank book covered with white paper, and five gummed labels with Bible verses printed on them. (On the back of the white book write, “ The Lamb’s Book of Life.” Paste a red cross on the side of the smallest box.) Lesson: This little white book reminds me of a book in heaven, called “The Lamb’s book of life” (Rev. *21:27), In that book are written the names of all who know Christ as personal Saviour. I am going to write my name in this little book, for I have received Christ as my Saviour. Now that my name is in the Lamb’s Book of Life, I will put it in this little box with the red cross on it. I am now in the Lamb’s Book of Life and in the cross of Christ. We will seal this box with the label on which is written 1 Peter 2:24: “Who his own self bare our sins, in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto right Golden Text: “Let no corrupt commu nication proceed out of your mouth” (Eph. 4:29). Outline and Exposition I. C hristian S peech (1-12) T he tongue has immense power. Though it is “ a little member,” its influence reaches far. God intends that this influence shall be for good (vs. 1-5). The Christian must exercise constant vigilance, for in the choice of words “in many things we offend all.” Moreover, there are some people who have a natural fluency of speech, but no vital message, and by this lack they also “offend.” If the tongue be controlled, the whole body will be controlled (v. 2). The meaning is not that the tongue itself will control the body, but that the strength required to con trol the tongue will be sufficient to rule in every other department of life. As illus trations of this fact, we are given three pictures, of a horse, of a ship, and of a fire (vs. 3-5). The uncontrolled tongue is a dangerous thing. But when it is under divine direction, it becomes a powerful influence for righteousness. The uncontrolled tongue is an enemy to mankind (vs. 6-10). It becomes “a world of iniquity” (v. 6). Such a tongue as this defiles the whole body. Its defilement is traceable to the depraved heart of the nat ural man, which is filled with the poison of sin, for “of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” The tongue sets on fire the wheel of nature and is set on fire

eousness : by whose stripes ye were healed.” We will put this box in one a little larger, which we will call “ God’s Care.” We will seal it with this sticker reading: “ He careth for you” (1 Pet. 5:7). We will put this box in a still larger box, marked “ God’s Love,” and seal it with a sticker on which John 3 :16 is written. Let us say the verse together. This still larger box, “ God’s Power,” is sealed with 1 Peter 1:5: “Who are kept by the power of God.” We will place all these other boxes in the one called “ God’s Promises,” and we will seal it with this sticker on which is written Hebrews 13:5: “ He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Where is my name now? It is in the Book of Life, in the cross of Christ, in God’s love, in God’s care, in God*s power, and in God’s promises. I am kept very securely, am I not? All who accept Christ as Saviour are thus kept.

by hell, but it also can be touched with the fire of heaven (cf. Isa. 6). The tongue has to do with the whole round of human activities. Its unchecked wildness is em phasized (vs. 7, 8). Untamable, restless, evil, full of poison, unnatural, it separates friends, ruins homes, blights lives, breaks hearts. James reminds us that out of the same mouth proceed blessings and curs ings (vs. 9, 10)—-a deplorable inconsist ency. Only One, among all the uncounted millions of men who have been upon this earth, spoke always wisely. “ Never man spake like this man.” He always spoke the right word, and He never uttered a word when silence was better. That One was the Son of God, our Saviour and our example in all things. The tongue behaves according to the inner nature of the individual that pos sesses it (vs. 11, 12). In order to speak sweetly and wisely, the believer must have experienced a change of heart. This trans formation, while impossible to nature, is
