divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another,” and can find no deliverance within them selves. Second, the Christian is urged to live according to the directions because of the manner of salvation (vs. 4-6). The origin of salvation is in the righteous love of God. It is God who saves the sinner (cf. Eph. 2:4). Under law, there are two parties to a covenant. Under grace, there is only one—and that One is God. He must keep faith with Himself and fulfill His own covenant. Therein lies assurance for the believer. The reason for His action is in His mercy, not in man’s works. Salvation is imparted to the believer by the washing of regeneration, which is once for all; and it is maintained by the renewing of the Hloly Spirit, a continuous impartation of righteousness to the believer. In this judi cial aspect of redemption, the believer con tinually should rejoice, and his praise to God for “so great salvation” should lead him to “walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing.” Third, the Christian is urged to live ac cording to the directions because of the results of salvation (v. 7). Believers are “made heirs”—judicially equal in their pos session of grace. One may enjoy his sal vation more than another enjoys his, but he cannot obtain more. Whatever accrues to Christ accrues also to the Christian (cf. Rom. S:17, 29). Fourth, the Christian is urged to live according to the directions because of the evidence of salvation (v. 8). An obligation rests upon each one who has accepted Christ as Saviour. The recipient of the regenerating grace of God must manifest not great, but good works. The good works are mentioned in part in chapter 2 of this Epistle. III. T h e D a n g e r s R evealed (9 -1 1 ) First, there is the danger of strife (v. 9). Unprofitable questions inevitably lead to strife. One with the Spirit of God within him will avoid the danger of making his salvation a mere debatable question, in stead of a living Reality—the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ — controlling the whole manner of his life. Second, there is the danger from heretics (vs. 10, 11). Without the wisdom that Cometh from above, heresy is difficult to discover. We should be sure we are deal ing with an actual heretic before we treat any one in the manner prescribed here. Some brother may not see eye to eye with another, but that is no reason for one of them to treat the other as though he were BLACKBOARD LESSON /2»to TOU THE' 06 ÖCEOF ÛOD THAT bWnOETH SALUTITIOF!- ■WHILELUE WEREWET smriEDS.- therefore igni man 6E.in CHRIST, HE ISO \ nEUJ f.DEPTUPF" \ ■ ¿_ I, i /acoasiT /

an outcast. Only the wisdom given by the Spirit of God, through the Word of God, and controlled by the purpose of the glory of God will' be sufficient to identify the erring one. Points and Problems 1. “ To speak evil of no man” (Tit. 3:2). Few passages have been more often misin terpreted than has this one. It does iy>t mean, as some claim, that it is wrong to point out sin in the lives of others. When Paul denounced Elymas the sorcerer as an “enemy of all righteousness,” he was hot speaking “ evil” but the truth. To speak “ evil” of men is to lie about them and misrepresent them. 2. “Shoviing all meekness unto all men” (v. 2). In order to understand properly the meaning of this exhortation, we should go back and study the life and actions of Moses, who was the meekest of all men (Num. 12:3). The modern notion of a meek man is a man without spirit who submits tamely to everything. Any one who reads the first chapters of Exodus, and listens to the blasts of defiance uttered by Moses against the king of Egypt, will begin to see that the Biblical conception of meek ness is something totally different. The meek man will submit where only his per sonal interests are involved, but he will fight to the death for the honor and will of God. 3. “ Washing of regeneration” (v. 5). This is not the rite of baptism, but that spiritual washing which takes place at the time of regeneration, and of which baptism
