NO TES on Christian Endeavor

By MARY G. G OODN ER

OCTOBER 3, 1937 NEW ADVENTURES FOR OUR SOCIETY P hilippians 3 :13, 14 Meditation on the Lesson Although Paul had reached a very high degree of spiritual development, he de clared in his masterly Epistle to the be lievers at Philippi that he had not attained —that he was very eagerly pressing on to ward a higher goal. He was fired with zeal and enthusiasm which the Lord Jesus Christ had Himself imparted; Paul had His vision. He saw the Christless and there fore joyless world groaning under the weight of sin, and his heart yearned to give the human souls bound by Satan the gospel of liberty which would break their shackles. Not only did he see lost men, but he saw also the face of his blessed Master just ahead, and longed to see Him and to be acceptable unto Him. Paul’s incentives for godly living and ef fective service are ours today. The world is in desperate need of a bright and genu ine witness of the Lord’s grace to save and His abundant power to keep; men are thirsting for the Water of Life which alone can satisfy in this barren desert of human insufficiency. Christ has promised that the living water that He gives shall be in us “ a well of water springing up into ever lasting life” (John 4:14). There are two requisites for an overflow ing Christian life: the first is daily medita tion upon God’s Word, and the second is unhindered communion with Christ. Through the Bible we learn that Christ would “ sanctify and cleanse” us “ with the washing of water by the word” (Eph. 5:26). Thus we know that His Word is, under the illumination of the Holy Spirit, the agent of cleansing and refreshing our lives. Does every member of our society consistently and regularly submit himself to this cleansing through the Word? Fruit ful Bible study is a vital and indispensable factor in producing a healthy, active group of witnesses for the Lord Jesus Christ. The second requirement grows out of the first, for communion with the Lord in worship and in prayer is established by knowing Him through His Word. Have we, as a group and as individuals, really learned to pray? Prayer is the breath of the Chris tian’s life. What will be the result in a Christian Endeavor Society if a definite, devotional spiritual relationship with the Lord is main tained? The logical outcome is that fruit will be borne for the Husbandman of our vineyard. Souls will be brought to the Lord Jesus Christ, and consecrated mission aries will be sent to carry the good tidings to the far corners of the earth. Are we presenting the Saviour to others here, and

are we supporting missionaries by our prayers and gifts? Are we asking the Lord to send us to foreign fields of service? Helps for the Leader I. L a n d A h e a d ! American history began as “Land ahead I” was shouted from the deck of Columbus’ boat, the “ Santa Maria.” “Land ahead!” has been the cry of exultation of marching columns as they push their way into that which lies beyond, unexplored and unex perienced. God calls us to get out from the life we now live unto a life that He will show us. Larger experiences and greater joys are ahead for all who get out of their country unto a closer fellowship with God. Paul was traveling to the “Land Ahead.” “ For getting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark . . . [as it is] in Christ Jesus .”— The Upper Room. II. W e l l W atered A young man came to his pastor one day with this very interesting testimony. “Why is it,” said he, “that I have lost the taste for the things of the world? I once could go the ways of others and seemingly enjoy it, but now there springs up within me an unpleasantness about all these worldly things.” The parched soil of this young man’s life had hungered, and he was thirsty for the living waters of life. By drinking of the Lord Jesus Christ, “the parched ground” had “ become a pool.” Not only had he found himself, but his thirsty soul had sprung up into living waters. No man can hinder the flower garden from coming into full bloom if the living waters are poured out upon the soil.— M a rc u s M . C h u n k . OCTOBER 10, 1937 AM I SHARING CHRIST WITH OTHERS? When we receive a piece of good news, what is the first impulse that comes to us? Experience tells us that our first thought is to share that information with some one, for we unconsciously desire that others shall partake of the same pleasure that came to us when we heard it. The meaning of “gospel” is “ good news,” and when its message finds its way into the heart of a normal vhuman being, it is im possible for that one to suppress the joy which results. When Andrew had listened to the Lord Jesus Christ, he was convinced that He was the Saviour, and he realized that his quest for life was consummated in this One. Immediately he ran home to his J ohn 1:40-42; A cts 8:34, 35 Meditation on the Lesson
