and souls of men. He instigates the evil desires of men which result in many of the fatal accidents—desires for drinking intoxi cating beverages, taking foolish risks, or getting a “thrill” out of life. Let us re member, also, that rushing and madly dash ing to appointments could be avoided if the Lord Jesus Christ were in absolute control in the life. In addition to becoming obedi ent to God’s will in our individual responsi bility in driving, we must act upon the truth that getting God’s will, through the gospel of Christ, into the hearts of men is the only cure for modern traffic trouble or any other disorder; it is absolutely funda mental to the establishing of law and order. Increase in traffic accidents involving in toxicated drivers or pedestrians is creating a serious hazard on streets and highways, the public safety department of the Automo bile Club of Southern California declared this week. Of the 2,828 fatal auto traffic accidents in the State last year, at least 617, or about 21 per cent, which brought death to 678 persons, are known to have in volved drivers or pedestrians who had been drinking, according to a Department of Motor Vehicles report just released. — The National Voice. II. “ C h a r io ts ” “ Nahum never saw a broad way in his life,” says Dr. McCrossan. “ All the streets in his day were little wider than our lanes. In Nahum 2 :4 we read that just before Christ returns, the people of this world will drive on broad ways, or boulevards in vehicles bearing flaming torches, and making a puf fing sound in the streets. They will jostle one another and will run like lightning.” — K e it h L. B rooks . Whether or not those who are contending for the free, unhindered use of liquor are prepared to look squarely at the situation, the fact remains that the drinking of al coholic beverages has been a greater factor of moral, social, and economic distress in our land than has any other single practice. The number of automobile accidents, the amount of property damage, and the count less broken homes throughout America stand as silent condemnations of this evil habit which has many thousands of our young people in its grip. The boasted benefits which were to result from the liquor traffic have not materialized. Liquor revenue has not ushered in the visionary Utopia. In stead, jails and prisons cannot be built fast enough to meet the new requirements. The debauched appetites of godless men and women are the only arguments for continu ing this national habit which is corroding the foundation of a once powerful nation. What is to be done? Legislation has failed to control this evil. Education has Helps for the Leader I. A T r a f f ic M e n a c e OCTOBER 31, 1937 LIQUOR— WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT ?
