failed to produce “moderate drinking”—the plan of liquor advocates. Conclusively it has been proved that external pressure is impotent to give a human being the judg ment and wisdom to refrain from indul gences which separate one from God. Christians are “the salt of the earth” (Matt. 5:13). Salt is aseptic, not antiseptic. It can help restrain the spread of corruption, but it cannot cure the corruption itself. The root of the problem of self-indulgence is in the heart of man, which in its natural state loves the sin which God hates. The gospel of Christ alone is sufficient to transform a soul, enabling it to rise above the lusts of sinful flesh which are the in heritance of every child of Adam. What is the remedy for the liquor situation ? There is only one thorough and permanent cure—the Lord Jesus Christ. When He fills the life of a person, through the pres ence and power of the Holy Spirit, that one is emptied of self and all its accompanying vices. “Be not drunk with wine, ¡wherein is excess; but be filled with the spirit.” The repeal of Prohibition did not solve a single problem except the problems of the brewers, vintners, and distillers, and of the liquor dealers who, under Prohibition, were stopped from putting their wares on the market. For the people it multiplied and magnified all their problems a hundredfold. Conditions now are incomparably worse than they were in the old saloon days. When national Prohibition went into effect, it closed 177,000 saloons. . . . We now have approximately 500,000 outlets or places of sale for intoxicating beverages, most of them with almost no restrictions. Grocery stores, department stores, drug stores, res taurants, filling stations, and airports free ly sell liquors, multiplying human woe in all forms and to all degrees. “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is rag ing: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise” (Prov. 20:1) is as true today as ever.—Statement issued by the National Temperance and Prohibition Council. II. T r a n sf o r m e d b y G race The transformed lives of such drunkards as Jerry McAuley and Mel Trotter witness to the power of the Lord Jesus Christ to change those who have reached the depths of sinful indulgences. Their struggles and their renunciation of the old life reveal the fact that the vice of worldly pleasure and the victory that is in Christ are not con gruous. The Lord Jesus imparts a new life which, when yielded to, effects a radical change in condition of heart and conduct in daily life. Read Samuel Hadley’s Do’wn in Water Street (the story of Jerry McAuley and his reclaimed associates), and other biographies of men who have been lifted from the abyss of depravity, and you will see that the grace of God is sufficient for every exigency of life—temporal and eter nal.— S e le cte d . Insurance Stocks In the June 21st issue of B est ’ s I n su r a n c e N e w s (Fire and Marine edi tion) an editorial article appears under the title “A History of Fire Insurance Stocks." This article is surprising in its impli cations. It tells of the market results of a carefully picked group of popular Industrial stocks and bonds traded ac tively on the New York Stock Exchange for four different periods during the last thirty-five years, in comparison with the results of a representative group of fire insurance stocks. Jesus Christ and invest it to everlasting dividends and glory; or you can connect it with the devil through alcohol, to everlast ing embarrassment, shame, and death. — W ade C. S m it h . Evangelistic Piano Playing With the advance of musical knowledge during the past decade has come a corres ponding demand for improvement in hymn playing. No longer can the church or Sunday-school pianist afford to be careless in accompaniment. No longer can he be satisfied with playing that is limited to mechanical rendition of the four-part musi cal score. Between 2,000 and 3,000 students have recognized these facts and have enrolled— to their own great profit and enjoyment—in the Evangelistic Piano Playing Course com posed and directed by Robert Harkness. In a carefully graded series of eighty lessons, this practical course with scores of musical illustrations and examples has made possi ble the musical development of every serious student who has enrolled. An adequate musical foundation must be provided in all piano accompaniment. Sight reading must be accurate, interpretation must be intelli gent, phrasing must be determined by the message of the song, jazzy performance must be eliminated, memorized playing must be attained, musical form must be ap plied. All these essentials and more are taught in the course by Mr. Harkness. Added to the assured musical develop ment which the course provides are the spiritual benefits inherent in it. The author believes that every pianist in the Lord’s work should consecrate his musical talent to Him. Hence the question of the surren dered life is faced in this study.
