him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). Essential in the cultivation of commun ion is the quiet mind. The inner life of the Christian is, of necessity, hidden: it is his real self. It is that citadel that sur renders to none save God: it is the soul of the soul where no one save God Himself can enter. It is that essence of being into which earthly companions cannot enter; only God can satisfy us there. It is be cause man is a spirit that he can com mune with God who is also a Spirit. Deep calls unto deep in an intercourse so still as to be of the nature of eternity. —R eginald K irby . OCTOBER 12 Coming to Reign “He shall reign for ever and ever” (Rev. 11:15). Sing we the King, who is coming to reign, Glory to Jesus, the Lamb that was slain, Life and salvation His empire shall bring, Joy to the nations when Jesus is King! All men shall dwell in His marvelous light, Races long severed His love shall unite, Justice and truth from His scepter shall spring, Wrong shall be ended when Jesus is King. Kingdom of Christ, for Thy coming we pray; Hasten, O Father, the dawn of the day When this new song Thy creation shall sing, Satan is vanquished, for Jesus is King! — The Keswick Convention. “ Go in to possess the land” (Josh. 1:11). See, child of God, what is within thy reach, if only thou wilt dare to deny thy self and take up thy cross! Send the spies into the Land of Promise. Climb the de lectable mountains, and put the telescope to thine eyes. And as the far more exceed ing and eternal weight of glory breaks on thy vision, thou wilt be prepared to count all things else, which had seemed gain, to be loss and dung, and not worthy to be mentioned in the comparison. Is the re nunciation hard? Do not forget that Christ is suffering with you in it all. His steps lie along this road.—F. B. M eyer . OCTOBER 13 Possessing

"God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Gal. 6:14). I turn to the cross, and I see there a love which comes from the depths of His own infinite being, who loves because He must, and who must because He is God. I turn to the cross, and I see there mani fested a love which sighs for recognition, which desires nothing of me but the repay ment of my poor affection, and longs to see its own likeness in me. — A lexander M aclaren . “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giv ing thanks to God and the Father by him” (Col. 3:17). Every task that we undertake is to be stamped with holiness.. . . Mr. Spurgeon, on one occasion, was examining a domestic servant for purposes of church member ship. Having obtained from her some ac count of her spiritual pilgrimage, he startled her by inquiring: “ Do you sweep under the mats?” That homely in quiry was intended to suggest that those who have come to know the Lord, and who have experienced His saving and keeping power, should do ordinary work in an ex traordinary way.— Life of Faith. OCTOBER 10 Enthroning Christ “ He must increase, but 1 must decrease” (John 3:30). Is it surprising that God makes, life an obstacle race for those who are the objects of His loving care? We have an ugly tenant to get rid of, and only as we come to realize the hatefulness and worthless ness of self, can we truly value the beauty and worth of Christ. The crowning of Him as King to the dethroning of self, then becomes our God-given objective. And self needs many a hard dint and jar, under God’s ordering hand, ere we are prepared to allow the Royal Guest to take His rightful place upon the throne of our lives.— E. G. C arre .
