forgive sin and if Jesus was not God He was as they said He was, a blasphemer. If the Unitarian conception of Jesus is true then He was a blasphemer and by the Mosiac law deserved execution. But if Jesus is God then the scribes were, and Unitarians are, blasphemers. Jesus demon strated at once to His startled hearers and to us that He was Divine and really had as He claimed power to forgive sins, by doing two things that God alone can do— reading their secret thoughts (cf. 2 Chron. 6:30; Jer. 17:9, 10; Ps. 139:1, 2) and heal ing instantly by a word the palsiedSman, He wishes man to “knouf’ that He has power on earth to forgive sins. So He performs a work which we can see and which demands Divine power for its accom plishment that we may know that He has the power for that which we cannot see and which als6 demands Divine power for its accomplishment,
Levi had a good name but was in a bad business; a Jew gathering taxes for Rome-, lining his pockets at the expense of his patriotism. To him Jesus gave a call, very sudden, very unexpected, very brief, very definite, “follow me.” There was a world of meaning in it, and a world of blessing if obeyed. It involved the renunciation of self, the loss of money, the taking' up of the cross, the jjsaying farewell to earthly ambitions, possessions and prospects (Matt. 16:24; Luke 9 :57, 58; 18:22), but it would bring reward and blessing and honor beyond measure (John 8:12; 12:26; Matt. 19:28). There was not a moment’s hesitation on Levi’s part; he arose at once, “forsook all” and “fojlowed Him.” It was the voice of Jesus that transformed this keen, money getting publican into a devoted disciple.
