GSCC Simulation Center earns provisional accreditation

Gadsden State Community College’s Simulation Center has received provisional accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), marking a significant achievement in the college’s commitment to excellence in health care education and simulation-based training. The college received notification of the accreditation on Aug. 10. SSH accreditation recognizes programs that demonstrate a commitment to quality and established best practices in simulation-based education. Accreditation validates the Simulation Center’s adherence to best practices in simulation design, development, delivery and evaluation. The process includes a rigorous self-study evaluation and peer review, providing opportunities to identify areas for improvement and enhance the effectiveness of simulation-based learning. Gadsden State joins Coastal Alabama Community College as one of only two community colleges in Alabama with SSH-accredited programs. Only eight colleges and universities statewide currently have accredited programs. The accreditation strengthens Gadsden State’s Nursing Program and supports interprofessional simulation experiences for students across multiple Health Sciences programs. These include Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Radiography, Medical Laboratory Technician, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Medical Assistant Technology, Surgical Technology and Dental Assisting. Through realistic, hands-on learning experiences facilitated by qualified instructors, the Simulation Center helps prepare students to develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide high-quality patient care. The accreditation further demonstrates the college’s dedication to preparing health care professionals through effective, evidence- based educational practices. “Receiving provisional accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare is a significant milestone for Gadsden State Community College and our Simulation Center,” said Dr. Evelyn Lightsey, simulation coordinator. “This achievement reflects our team’s dedication to providing high-quality, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students to meet the demands of today’s health care environment. We are proud to support not only our nursing students but also students across our Health Sciences programs as they develop the confidence, critical-thinking skills and clinical judgment needed to deliver exceptional patient care.” The Simulation Center staff includes Dr. Evelyn Lightsey, simulation coordinator; Dr. Nicole Tolbert, simulation specialist; and Katie Bryant, part-time simulation assistant. The simulation team extends its appreciation to Dr. Cynthia Mullinax, nursing program director, and Dr. Joey Battles, dean of Health Sciences, for their support in achieving this milestone. The provisional accreditation represents an important step forward for Gadsden State Community College as it continues to strengthen health care education and provide students with high-quality simulation-based training experiences. The Gadsden State Cardinal Foundation celebrated the power of education and the importance of investing in student success during the 2026 Cardinal Gala on Thursday, Oct. 8, at The Venue at Coosa Landing. Centered on the theme “Igniting Futures – Lighting the Path to Student Success,” the event brought together alumni, community leaders, friends and supporters of Gadsden State Community College for an evening of dinner, celebration and a shared commitment to transforming students’ lives through education. “The success of the Cardinal Gala reflects the generosity and commitment of a community that believes in the power of education”, said Hillary Folsom, director of advancement and alumni relations at Gadsden State. “We are grateful to everyone who helped make this evening possible and who continues to invest in the future of Gadsden State students. Every gift and every act of support helps create opportunities, remove barriers and empower our students to achieve their goals. Together, we are igniting futures and lighting the path to student success.” The evening showcased the collective commitment of the Gadsden State community to helping students overcome challenges, achieve their goals and reach their full potential. Entertainment featured performances by Gadsden State Fine Arts students and the Gadsden State Show Band, whose upbeat setlist had guests on their feet. Student volunteers also played an important role in the event’s success by assisting guests and supporting behind-the-scenes operations. Guests enjoyed a gourmet dinner and participated in a silent auction featuring exclusive items and experiences donated by community partners. The event also welcomed more than a dozen local businesses and individuals as new partners, helping the Cardinal Foundation raise thousands of dollars to support student success. Following the event, extra meals were donated to the local Salvation Army, extending the spirit of generosity and service beyond the evening’s festivities. These activities added to an evening dedicated to celebrating the college, supporting its students and giving back to the community. The Cardinal Foundation plays a vital role in connecting donor generosity with opportunities that make a lasting difference in students’ lives. Scholarships, educational resources and other forms of support help reduce barriers to higher education and empower students to pursue their academic and career aspirations. The Cardinal Gala is one of Gadsden State’s premier fundraising events, bringing together individuals and organizations united by a shared belief in the transformative power of education. Through their continued generosity, supporters help ignite futures and light the path to student success.
