Resident Highlight – David

David entered the world in Seattle on December 12, 1949, and grew up in the Pacific Northwest with his mother Edith, and father Henry, younger sister Marie, and brother Philip. They were an adventurous family and spent their summer vacations exploring the islands and inlets of the Pacific Northwest via a small aluminum boat with camping equipment piled high and loaded with the family. Following High School graduation, David continued to explore the Northwest waterways, working on a Norwegian Research vessel between Seattle and Alaska. He attended the University of Washington, where he met his sweetheart, Laura, who was working at University Hospital as a nurse. They were soon married and recently celebrated their 52 nd anniversary. After earning his B.S. in Psychology at the University of Washington, David went on to attend University of Puget Sound, where he graduated with a J.D. in Law. During this time, Laura also obtained a pilot ’ s license with an IFR and multi - engine rating. David

and Laura moved to Eureka, California in 1976, after David passed the California Bar. His first job as an attorney was in the law firm of Moose Mathews, a well - known Eureka attorney. He later teamed up with another lawyer from the same firm and started Dun and Barnum, which eventually became the Dun & Martinek law firm. David ’ s legal career spanned forty - four years, including thirty - six as the primary counsel for Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) and retired in December 2020. David and Laura have maintained a lifelong friendship with Red Emmerson, founder of SPI, and the Emmerson family. David has always loved hunting, fishing, and boating. He was considered a skilled captain of yachts up to sixty - five feet in length and enjoyed vacations with friends and family in the waters of the Pacific Northwest. David has always had a rich imagination which led him to write thriller novels, of which five were published. His first novel, “ Necessary Evil ” was on the New York Times Best Seller list. Later in life he developed an interest in Xtreme off - roading. He purchased a Jeep which he continually

customized in the never - ending task of making it the most capable hardcore off roader possible. He affec- tionately called it his “ Monster Jeep ”. He enjoys keeping abreast of current events, watching romantic comedies, spending time with family, and is a fan of gospel and country music. He is especially close to his nephew Justin who is a business owner and family man living in Folsom, CA and who is always on hand to help when needed. David would love to visit his favorite places once again in the San Juan Islands, Pacific Northwest and Canada and enjoys reminiscing about his lifelong adventures there.
