signed by the original uk cast First UK edition, signed on the half-title by several of the original UK cast members, including: George Chakiris (Riff), Don McKay (Tony), Riggs O’Hara (Snowboy), Marlys Watters (Maria), Ben Gerard (Chino), and Geoff L’Cise (Bernardo), the latter stepping in to the role to cover for Ken Le Roy. Chakiris auditioned for both rival gang leaders shortly after being “completely blown away” ( Memoir , p. 41) by the original Broadway performance in 1957, and was surprized at his success in landing the part of Riff. He was equally surprized when he received an invitation to audition for the same two roles for the 1961 film adaptation. This time, Chakiris was cast as Bernando, and his highly acclaimed performance won him the 1962 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The UK production began at the Manchester Palace Theatre (14 November–6 December 1958) and moved to the West End for performances in Her Majesty’s Theatre (12 December 1958–10 June 1961). It was first published as a book in the US the preceding the year. Octavo. Original red boards, spine lettered in gilt, publisher’s blind emblem on rear cover. With dust jacket. Frontispiece and 6 further half-tones after photographs of the production by Angus McBean. Front free endpaper with gift inscription, wishing “Have a good cry” and dated 1960, for one Jacqueline Tiley, her ownership inscription beneath. Small bump to foot of spine, occasional tiny spots, contents otherwise clean. A very good copy indeed in slightly rubbed and toned dust jacket, price-clipped, small chips to fold ends, two closed tears, still very good. ¶ George Chakiris, My West Side Story: A Memoir , 2021. £1,250 [159827] 97 LAWRENCE, D. incentive for supporting Dark Horse Comic’s Lone Wolf and Cub series. The Japanese samurai manga was first released in Japan in 1970, where it was an instant bestseller. First Comics published the first English language translations, beginning in 1987, but shut down in 1991 before completing the series, publishing less than a third of the run. Dark Horse Comics took it up in September 2000 and completed the run in December 2002. The story was adapted into six films starring Tomisaburo Wakayama, and has had widespread cultural influence, most notably on Frank Miller’s Sin City and Ronin comics, and on the 2019 television series The Mandalorian . line of the first column, and, in the following line, the words “the” and “eye” are printed “thee ye”. These typographical errors were corrected for the second issue which, in some copies, omitted Kipling’s name in the lower right corner. Richards notes that the publication “appears to have been done solely for Gilliss’s pleasure”, which would account for its scarcity. A later edition was produced by Alan Tabor, a graduate of the Manchester School of Art and the Royal Academy of Art, who arranged with Kipling to issue an edition of 5,000 copies. Broadside (285 × 388 mm) with single fold. Housed in a custom red cloth chemise with full red morocco pull-off slipcase. Printed in red and black with decorative gilt borders. Bookplate of E. H. 94 KIPLING, Rudyard. The Glory of the Garden. [New York: privately printed by Walter Gilliss, November 1922]. “our england is a garden that is full of stately views” First separate edition, first issue. Kipling’s poem first appeared in A History of England in 1911. This separate broadside publication was an unauthorized edition apparently done by Walter Gilliss (1855–1925), the “typographical advisor” to Kipling’s publisher Doubleday. Richards cites an auction catalogue from 1936 to suggest that only six copies were printed of this first issue. An eight stanza poem in quatrains, Kipling’s “The Glory of the Garden” is a fine example of the author’s patriotic poetry. It describes Britain through an extended metaphor of a well-designed and maintained garden. Harkening back to the perfection of Eden, Kipling states that this garden has natural beauty but must be sustained through committed work. There were two issues. In the first, the words “the” and “terraces” are printed as one word in the third

“ Lady Chatterley’s Lover – written in the astonishing time of just five weeks, in one of Lawrence’s last great bursts of creative energy – also sustained him, as he overcame the difficulties lying in the way of an individual publishing and distributing his own book. With the help of the Florentine bookseller Pino Orioli, the handsome volume was printed in and distributed from Florence, and made Lawrence more money than he had ever imagined” ( ODNB ). Octavo.
