COVER STORY

DR. ELLIS ANSWERS When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer, and what inspired you? I never really set out to become a writer, but a mentor of mine used to advise me to write down the things I learned and taught. The idea for this book came as an unction from the Holy Spirit. I remember saying, “Lord, I don’t know how to make this a reality.” My mentor also told me that writing things down would allow others to know my thoughts and understand that I was here—that I left something behind. How long does it take you to write a book? And what is your work schedule when you’re writing? I can’t say how long it takes others, but for me, this book took about four years. That included research, gathering material, and figuring out what to say and how to say it. At one point, I stopped working on it altogether. Then something shifted—I became determined to finish it. That’s when I truly buckled down, put in the work, and pushed toward getting it published. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk? I’d say my most interesting quirk is the simple amazement that I can actually write. I never saw myself as a writer, but once I started, it just started flowing. That still surprises me. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books? Mostly from messages I’ve preached, lessons I’ve taught, books I’ve read, and all the research I’ve done over the years. Some ideas also come from classes and conferences I’ve attended. When did you write your first book, and how old were you? This is my very first book. I began writing it around age 68 or 69, and I completed it at 72.
