Veterans’ Benefits Assistance - PASSED (AARP Supported) Senate Bill 910, by Senator Collins (companion House Bill 277, by Representatives Albert & Alvarez). Approved by Governor; Chapter No. 2025- 150, effective upon becoming law. The legislation authorizes the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs to conduct criminal background checks on persons working with children or vulnerable adults. It also enhances consumer protections for Florida veterans seeking assistance from a third-party provider in obtaining veterans’ benefits. Third-party providers are subject to limits on contingent fee agreements, prohibited from requiring non-refundable fees or interest payments and must waive all anticipated compensation if a veteran claimant dies before their claim is fully processed. The legislation also strengthens oversight of providers’ representations to veteran clients and provides state enforcement authority under Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.
