Traffic Offenses - FAILED (AARP Supported) Senate Bill 1318, by Senator Grall (companion House Bill 501, by Representative Tant, never had a hearing). The legislation would have amended sections in 316 & 318, Florida Statutes. The legislation would have renamed the Florida Ban on Texting While Driving Law to the Florida Hands-Free Driving Law and expanded restrictions on handheld device use while driving. It would have required drivers to use a hands-free accessory for sustained device use and imposed stricter penalties for violations in work zones and school zones. The legislation would have mandated a hearing for drivers cited for running a red light or stop sign that resulted in a crash.
Military Affairs - FAILED (AARP Supported) Senate Bill 1280, by Senator Collins (companion House Bill 1241, by Representative Redondo, never had a hearing). The legislation would have created section 295.25 and amended sections 15.0465, 295.124, 295.21, 295.22, 320.084, 322.21, and 394.47891, Florida Statutes. The legislation would have revised and improved various services for veterans and military servicemembers, focusing on education, training and benefits enhancements. It would have modified the calculation of training costs and grant reimbursement limits under the Veterans Florida Opportunity Program and provided filing fee exemptions for veterans incorporating or updating veteran-owned businesses in Florida. Additionally, the legislation would have authorized judicial discretion to consider dishonorably discharged former servicemembers for inclusion in veterans’ treatment court programs.
