How to Rebuild After Bankruptcy: Part 4

If you know someone with good credit — maybe a close family member or good friend with 10 years of stellar credit history — they may be able to help you boost your credit score by making you an authorized user on their account. Be warned that this strategy is not one that should be taken lightly. Becoming an authorized user means you are added to someone else’s credit card account. The primary account holder doesn’t have to give you any information about their account, and you don’t even need to use the credit card yourself in order for this strategy to pay off. Just by having your name on the account, all that good credit starts getting reported under your name too, even if you’ve never made any purchases. However, authorized users are not legally obligated to pay debts that accumulated on the account, even if they accumulated that debt themselves. While you don’t need to know any information about the account, it’s still possible for an authorized user to run up debts with a credit card that has been issued in their name

but is attached to someone else’s account. If a friend or family member agrees to make you an authorized user on their account, it means they trust you a great deal. Treat that trust with integrity and respect. Remember that this strategy can go both ways. If the primary account holder suddenly stops making payments and their credit goes down, your credit will also take a hit. But if done correctly, this strategy can increase your score quickly. If you know someone in your life who you feel comfortable asking for this favor, be entirely honest with them. Let them know the potential risks and show them your plan to rebuild your credit. You don’t have to be an authorized user on their account permanently to reap the rewards. If someone does agree to make you an authorized user, double check that their card issue reports authorized users to credit bureaus. Not all of them do, and if your authorized user status doesn’t show up on your credit report, it won’t improve your score.
