DEVELOPS NEW DEWORMER

By Patti Wilson | Contributing Editor

E ric Moore, DVM, Norbrook director of technical services-North America, and I visited after the Cattle Industry Convention to discuss the product that is de- signed for effective parasite control as well as the protection of the dung beetle. Tauramox (moxidectin) Injectable Solution is the cattle industry’s first generic Cydectin (moxidectin) injectable, according to Norbrook’s website. It treats and controls a broad range of internal and external parasites, including gastrointestinal roundworms, lungworms, grubs, mites and lice. The ready-to-use product contains 1 percent moxidectin, a deworming compound that does not decimate dung beetle populations. The injectable method provides greater accuracy of dosage and carries a 21-day withdrawal. Moore reported a 20 to 30 percent cost savings over the original Cydectin product. Far-Reaching Benefits Moore explained the benefits of a healthy dung beetle (also called a scarab) population. Found worldwide, the United States hosts more than 50 species. First, we must understand that they remove manure, or “fecal pats,” by burying the material underground. This sub- terranean area is then used for brooding eggs or nesting. The act of burying organic matter provides fertilizer for fields and pastures. It also denies flies any egg-laying areas, reducing local fly populations by up to 95 percent. Scarabs build and aerate soil, enable water intake and disburse plant seed. They also dispense carrion. Studies have shown that areas cleared of manure by dung beetles are more likely to be grazed efficiently than those with a load of fecal material. Cows commonly leave up to 2 feet of space around a manure pat, creating inefficiencies in grazing systems. Undisbursed manure takes up to two years to break down, only making Benefits of healthy dung beetle populations are being researched in regard to their value. Studies are being expanded to include the dollar value of “eco services.” What is that? You no doubt are aware of the enormous benefits of bees to agriculture and all of plant life. They are considered the greatest eco service. Earthworms are also priceless. Likewise, dung beetles are currently being analyzed for their specific value. We may soon learn how much money producers might invest to protect and matters worse. Eco Services

encourage their dung beetle populations. What is the dollar value of these tiny creatures to a given pasture system? The consensus is to protect and utilize dung beetles as a resource to your cattle operation. Important Safety Information Cattle must not be harvested for human consumption within 21 days of treatment. This drug is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal peri- od has not been established for preruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal.
