In addition to marking the anniversary of our country’s independence, July is also my mom’s birthday month, so it’s the perfect time to share with you what an incredible person she is. She has been so influential in shaping my values, work ethic, and even love of music. Like my dad, my mom is a determined, hardworking person who’s made sure her children live by those same values. After leaving home at a young age, my mom’s work ethic helped her succeed against all odds. She went on to earn her computer programming degree and establish a career for herself. My mom had the same high expectations for her children as she did for herself. Roxana and I were athletic and participated in sports, which might be enough for many parents, but my mom knew it was important for us to be well-rounded. She required my sister and I to participate in the arts, so we both played the piano. It wasn’t something that came second, either. Once, in high school, I skipped a piano class because I wanted to focus on my upcoming basketball game. The next day at A LOVE OF MUSIC, A STRONG WORK ETHIC, AND A SENSE OF DUTY WHAT I OWE TO MY MOTHER

playing. I signed up for a class and practiced in our college’s music room. It’s a hobby I still enjoy to this day, and I wouldn’t have that musical inclination if it weren’t for my mom. Both my parents worked while Roxana and I were growing up, which meant that even when they rearranged their schedules, there were still gaps in the day when my parents had to rely on others to take care of my sister and me. During a lot of our childhood, Roxana and I went to day care — but my mom wasn’t just going to leave us in someone else’s hands.

basketball, my mom marched into the gym, pulled me out of practice, and wouldn’t let me return until I’d gone to piano class. Our coach even came to my house to ask if I could come back. “Not until he goes to piano,” my mom told him. She was insistent that her kids honor their responsibilities, and though I didn’t always understand it when I was a kid, I’m so grateful she instilled a sense of duty in us. Despite trying to dodge piano when I was in high school, I found that when I got to college, I actually missed

She and my dad (though definitely coordinated by my mom) would drive by our day care from time to time and make surprise visits, just to see what we were up to. It was her way of checking on us and making sure we were being treated well when she couldn’t be there. Her diligence is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about cases involving injuries to kids at day care facilities. Last year, my mom and I traveled to London, and the trip brought us even closer together. It reminded me how lucky I am to have such a strong, determined, and, most of all, caring person in my life.

Happy birthday, Mom!

As She Prepares for Law School SHEBA REFLECTS ON 3 YEARS WITH THE FIRM

Next month, we’re celebrating an exciting next step for our team member. For the past three years, Sheba has been part of our legal team, starting with us in 2015 as a legal intern, and then moving into a role as our legal assistant. This August, Sheba will be making the next move in her legal career as she heads to law school. Sheba has known that she wanted to pursue a career in law since she was 13. She has no qualms about the challenging years of study that lay ahead, but she wants to learn more about the personal injury field and “see behind all the glamour.” Sheba says, “I wanted to make sure I was signing up for what I thought I wanted.” After interning with the Button Law Firm, she knew she’d found her niche. “In the past three years, I was reminded every day that this is exactly what I want to be doing.” Sheba’s passion for the law and helping the underrepresented are her driving forces that she cultivated while working for clients at the Button Law Firm. “These clients are amazing, phenomenal people who’ve been wronged. They’re the clients I could see myself waking up and fighting for,” says Sheba. She believes having a passion for people is necessary to be a good lawyer. “You have to be. It’s necessary in this field. If you’re not passionate, you’re not going to put your all into it,” says Sheba. “That’s why we have this team of equally passionate people. We put 100 percent into everything.”

While working for the Button Law Firm, Sheba was also pursuing her MBA — a challenging undertaking that exemplifies her determined spirit. She attributes her success in both endeavors to our fearless leader, attorney Russell Button. “Without a doubt, I would not have been

able to do it had Russell not been so understanding of my schedule and study needs. I’m grateful to the firm.” When Sheba shared her aspirations with Russell, she said, “He was 100 percent on board, and did everything he could to help me get through it.” The supportive environment is a quality Sheba speaks highly of. “The other employees at the firm were 100 percent supportive in everything we did together to figure out tasks, timing, and meetings. It speaks to the environment we’re dealing with — firm cohesiveness. I can’t imagine finding that support anywhere else.”

We will miss Sheba, but we are so excited to watch her make her goals happen in law school. Best of luck, Sheba!

IT’S NOT A MYTH! A MUST-READ BOOK FOR ALL SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS

“E-Myth” is an amazing read for any small business owner or anyone looking to open a business. It takes you through the lasting, fundamental secret to running a successful business: systems. Even better, it walks you through the different phases you will go through mentally. Phase 1 discusses the exciting phase of being out on your own, doing everything yourself, and working long hours. Phase 2 begins once your product is selling and you start to get in over your head with work. You begin to hire, but you do it like everyone else. With no systems in place, your product begins to lose its magic appeal. You reach the fork in the road. You can downsize and never grow again, OR learn from your lessons and scale up with systems. After asking for help, you reach Phase 3 — scaling up with systems. You’ve heard me mention systems over and over, but it really comes to light in this book. For the last two years, we have been creating systems for the cases we are really good at, especially cases where kids are hurt at daycare. Now my team can carry out those tasks where we have established systems faster, better, and more efficiently

than we ever did before! It has even allowed us to take on more cases. We now have our marketing systems being put in place. It is freeing me up so much. Letting go of the belief that I had to handle every call, email, and task in the office has allowed us to process our cases faster and get even better results for our clients. I highly recommend this amazing book; it has been great for me and my business. We have been on systems overload putting everything in place to allow the Button Law Firm to

run smoothly, quickly, and efficiently. If you or anyone you know would like to run any small-business questions by me, reach out by email or call us. I would love to hear from you.

Our Dog-Friendly Firm

THE STORY OF CHUIE

the lake. Suddenly, they came across a young puppy with stickers and dirt in her fur. She started following them, and before they knew it, she’d walked all the way back to the house with them. Russell and his family laughed at the funny pup. She was well-behaved but she had no collar or identification, so Russell took her to about 50 different houses in the neighborhood trying to locate her owner. No one claimed the 10-month-old puppy. Everyone we took her to said she’d shown up a few days earlier and had been living on the street. Russell wasn’t sure he could handle a dog at that point. He’d always loved them, including the dog his family had when he was growing up, but he was also in the middle of law school. At the same time, he knew he couldn’t just leave this puppy to fend for herself. He took her home, and after a week, he knew Chuie would be staying with him. Many wonder about her name. When Russell first brought Chuie home, she was very timid and scared. Russell gave her a sock to chew on, and she gnawed on it constantly. Russell also ate at the restaurant called Chuy on the same day he got her, and it seemed to be a fitting name for this timid young pup. Today, Russell and Chuie continue to enjoy long walks together, and Chuie still always follows him home.

The Button Law Firm is a dog-friendly office. Our whole team is passionate about their pets, including attorney Russell Button. His pup, Chuie, is an important part of his life. The story of how Chuie and Russell found each other is a sweet one.
