SLDB Team Efforts - Dubai Torrential Downpour

Recognition of the SLDB team efforts to “ Do Good ” & “ Never Give Up ” in the face of adversity.

On the afternoon of April 16, 2024, Dubai experienced heavy downpours of rain which recorded 25 cms in just a few hours. This was the largest recorded rainfall over a 24-hour period in 75 years in the UAE. Apart from the UAE, 15 students in Muscat died while outdoors when a Wadi in the hills was flooded and swept them away. • The airport runways and access roads were flooded with flights having to be diverted away from Dubai and Abu Dhabi • The Metro was closed, and the Taxi Services were suspended. • All Schools and Government offices were closed and instructed to work remotely.

The SLDB General Manager together with his ExCom team and staff responded immediately and valiantly.

I witnessed numerous examples of their commitment to guest care and safety, protection of the assets and genuine care for our colleagues.

• The General Manager and senior management stayed in the hotel for the following three days, despite some colleagues having water damage in their own homes. • The managers were on the floor from the early stage of flooding throughout each day. o Showing a warm and sympathetic spirit, they greeted and escorted guests, rallied the teams on the ground, and shared smiles with everyone. o One of our doormen walked for three hours from the staff dormitory to be on duty. o So many others stood on duty or worked in the administration offices to support for twelve hours or more. o Some colleagues had to walk 18 KM to their home and return for duty when they could. Arrangements were made so our colleagues could stay overnight in temporary beds placed in the health club, function rooms & the Shangri-La Academy. • The responsibility to deliver on our business commitments was equally evident. o House guests and outside guests filled all outlets to capacity generating exceptional revenues for the day. o Occupancies jumped to 80% and 90% during this period. o In-house events were catered for without disappointment. o Passer-by guests who sought shelter and use of the washroom were welcomed warmly.

Leadership, commitment, and care at their highest levels.

Thank you!
