HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

As we round out 2020, I am looking forward to the Christmas holidays and the time I get to spend with my family. Growing up in Wisconsin, Christmas Eve was the time that we really spent celebrating with our family. It was filled with wonder and excitement, as well as appreciation for what we had growing up. Mom and Dad always had a new way for Santa to come while us three kids were engaged with bath time, waiting in the car for Mom to come out when we were going to one of our grandparent’s homes, or some other form of trickery or diversion. We had our traditions of home- made Christmas cookies and milk after we opened the presents from Santa. Santa got some cookies too and Rudolph got a carrot. Then we would spend the rest of the evening playing with our toys after Dad got done putting them together. When my kids were young, we slowly built our own traditions. We opened presents from each other on Christmas Eve and Santa came while they were sleeping so they opened those presents on Christmas Day. We did, however, continue with my childhood tradition of making Christmas Eve a big family time. There were different cookies but we certainly had milk to go with them. One tradition I started was making Ceviche for Christmas Eve dinner. For those of you that don’t know what Ceviche is, it is a Latin dish usually made with either fish or shrimp, and plenty of onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and lime. It is eaten with tortillas or corn chips. Now some of you might be wondering how a small town midwestern boy got into making Ceviche?Well I was first exposed to it on a trip to

IslaMujeres, an island off the coast of Mexico, many years ago. That was before the internet was even a “thing” so I didn’t have the ability to look up a recipe on line. Then I treated a patient from Ecuador and we talked about Ceviche. She gave me one of her family recipes and lo and behold, a tradition was born. I think it may have had something to do with the green cilantro, red tomatoes, and white onions that just made it look like Christmas. The tradition of having Ceviche on Christmas Eve continues to go strong to this day. My family loves it, or at least indulgesme with it. It isn’t your typical Christmas food but isn’t that what a tradition is all about? Doing something or making something year after year that everyone looks forward to and brings people closer together, even if it is not traditional. There is that word again. A tradition doesn’t have to be traditional. It is all about finding something that is special and fun, and then doing it year after year. So, in this year that some of us would like to forget, do something bold and start a new tradition. It doesn’t have to be Ceviche. Putting a positive spin on 2020 and adding a new tradition for Christmasmight be a great way to go into 2021. Let’s set it up to be a great year! Tim Bonack

This causes painful grinding and irritation of the TMJ. Other causes may include: • Poor alignment of or trauma to the teeth or jaw • Arthritis or other inflammatory

Do you suffer from jaw pain, headaches, painful chewing, or clicking and popping in your jaw? These could all be signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMJD. The temporomandibular joint is essentially where your jaw meets your skull It is one of the most complex joints in the body and can be affected by neck and head position, eating or chewing certain foods, habitual postures or positions, and direct trauma. It is also often associated with stress and poor sleep habits. Grinding the teeth or clenching the jaw during sleep are also common causes of TMJD and your dentist might be the first person to make you aware that you have this syndrome based on the wear pattern on your teeth. Other symptoms of TMJD may include neck pain, ear ache or pressure, aching or tingling around the ear, face, or jaw, or even pain in the teeth. What Causes TMJ Syndrome? Multiple factors contribute to the muscle tightness and dysfunction that characterize this condition. Most often, poor posture and neck alignment change the pull of the muscles that make your jaw move.

VEGAN GINGERBREAD COOKIES INGREDIENTS:

• 1 cup white whole-wheat flour • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp baking soda • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

• ¼ tsp salt • ½ cup coconut oil, at room temperature • ½ cup sugar • ½ cup molasses • ¼ cup water • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Yoga. Yoga provides relaxing physical activity all year long and can easily be done in your bedroom, living room or, just about anywhere in the house. You can even use yoga first thing in the morning to wake up slowly and get your body warmed up for the day. Running Alternatives. If you love cardio, you probably don’t want to give up that runner’s high, but you might not want to venture out into frosty conditions either. Get your heart pumping indoors with cardio exercises you can do at home, such as:

• 2 tsp ground ginger • ½ tsp ground nutmeg

INSTRUCTIONS:

Combine whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and salt in a medium bowl. Cream coconut oil and sugar together with an electric mixer in a large bowl. Add molasses, water and vanilla and beat until mixed thoroughly. Gradually add the flour mixture, beating at low speed until just combined. Divide the dough into thirds. Place one third of the dough on a 12-inch-long sheet of parchment paper and shape into a disk. Top with a second sheet of parchment. Roll out the dough between the parchment to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. Place the parchment with the rolled dough on a baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough, stacking each piece of parchment with rolled dough on top of the previous one. Freeze on the baking sheet 30 minutes to 1 day. Position a rack in middle of oven; preheat to 350 degrees F. Line 2 or 3 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Remove the top sheet of parchment and cut out cookies with 2 1/2- to 3-inch cookie cutters. Transfer the cookies to a prepared baking sheet with a wide, thin spatula, spacing them about 1 1/2 inches apart. Bake about 10minutes. Let the cookies cool for 5minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool. Decorate as desired.
