CHANGE YOUR LIFE BY FINDING YOUR VILLAGE CelebratingWorld Teachers’ Month
There’s a reason why universities have departments, not just one philosopher or biology professor — to thrive, learning requires us to be exposed to many different voices. I’m lucky to have had that experience in martial arts, despite not having the money to learn it at an early age. In fact, without other people’s generosity to me, it would’ve been far more difficult to learn martial arts. When I became a teenager, I found a former FBI agent who taught me Judo, then, upon entering college, I learned more formal martial arts in Japanese karate. But, when I lost my college scholarship due to an injury, I couldn’t imagine giving up martial arts too. I studied Jeet Kun Do and Kung Fu, then ran a new health club in Indianapolis before jumping into my law enforcement career. It took years until I’d finally arrive at Isshinryu Karate (Okinawan style), and that particularly resonated with me. It’s why my most impactful martial arts Sensei was Clarence Ewing, a ninth degree black belt. Sensei was first generation, taught by master/founder of Isshinryu in Okinawa, Tatsuo Shimabuku. In result, I am second generation to the founding master and have been the rank of sixth degree Black Belt in Isshinryu Karate for over 25 years. Although I was lucky enough to learn this martial art so closely to its founder, finding your village isn’t about finding just one person (although one mentor can certainly change your life). Many people in our lives offer meaning, lessons, and insight into our experiences if we keep an open mind and ask the right questions — this includes students who we’re supposed to teach ourselves.
After all, he who teaches learns. My students have influenced me immensely. Thank you, students, for the many lessons about courage — especially from my students with physical disabilities. My advanced students particularly continue to inspire me with their extraordinary skills, dedication and loyalty, such as a few of “ Many people in our lives offer meaning, lessons, and insight into our experiences, if we keep an open mind and ask the right questions — this includes students who we’re supposed to teach ourselves. ” our chief instructors and most loyal students to this day: including my daughters Alyssa and Abby, and other advanced black belt students such as John Campbell (West Point grad), Matt Chasteen (FBI), Dave Adney (police), Jon Stropes, Luke Pennington, and many others (too numerous to mention) who have gone on to experience much success in life (doctors, lawyers, public safety, teachers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and parents) — perhaps in small part due to their martial arts training.
to fulfillment and personal enrichment. Martial arts is a way of daily life, and it made me into who I am today as a husband, father, friend, leader, mentor, and lawyer. It has taught me, and continues to teach me, peace in my mind, respect for all people, and confidence in my abilities to perform with the utmost excellence of any task, whether martial arts related or not. It has taught me “peace if possible” but “combat if necessary” – whether literally or figuratively – and includes lawyering. Most of all, it’s taught me that you should pay your skills forward. I’ve been lucky to have such an incredible village of mentors but to also be a part of that village for hundreds of other police recruits and civilian students over decades. I would not change a thing or exchange these experiences or skills for anything. If you celebrate World Teachers’ Day this month, I encourage you to try and expand your village — or maybe join someone else’s. There’s no better way to make the world a little bit better than to provide the rare gift of generosity through teaching, learning, and sharing your open mind.

CAN AUTOMOBILE UNINSURED COVERAGE HELP A BIKER? Before we get into the specifics of how automobile UM coverage can affect bikers, it’s important to note that you should have UM coverage on all of the vehicles you own, period. After getting into an accident, the last thing you want to worry about is being able to afford not just your own medical bills but potentially your passengers’. Whether they’re family members or friends, you don’t want to put anyone in a vulnerable position like that.
SPOOKY CITY REGULATIONS Halloween Laws Across the U.S. Halloween can be a mischievous holiday. The most innocent of us reserve it for backyard parties and trick- or-treating, but some like to get a little rowdier than others. That’s exactly why various city councils across the U.S. have passed some seemingly unusual laws to regulate spooky festivities. Rehoboth Beach, Delaware: No Sunday Trick-or-Treating If Halloween falls on a Sunday, children in Rehoboth Beach are required to trick-or-treat the night before. The explanation in the city code is simple, but ambiguous: to prevent children and their guardians from going door to door on Sunday evenings. Rehoboth Beach law also forbids children from roaming the streets on Halloween “with the intent to cause trouble,” but what exactly that means is ambiguous as well. Hollywood, California: No Silly String The Los Angeles City Council has banned Silly String and all other brands of aerosol string from use on Halloween in the Hollywood area. From midnight on Oct. 31 until noon on Nov. 1, no one is allowed to spray, sell, or distribute Silly String in public locations. Use of Silly String got so popular in the city on Halloween that the mess left behind became a strain on sanitation workers, and the city sympathized with them. Belleville, Illinois: No 8th Graders Trick-or-treating is most often viewed as an activity reserved for younger generations, but how do you determine what age is “too old” for this type of generally good-natured fun? Well, the city of Belleville settled the ambiguity by passing a law restricting teenagers who are past the eighth grade — generally older than 13 — from going door to door on Halloween. Walnut, California: No Masks Without Permits In a simpler time, there was no paperwork required to celebrate Halloween to the fullest. But in the city of Walnut, no one can wear a mask or other disguise on public streets without a permit from the sheriff. The law doesn’t specify any exceptions, so residents are left to assume that everyone from age 5 to 100 must abide. Whatever your Halloween celebrations might look like this year, it’s important to have fun, but remember to abide by any rules or laws your city might have in place in an effort to keep its citizens safe.
That’s why underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage exists.
We’ve discussed in past newsletters that there are a lot of uninsured and underinsured drivers on the road. According to a 2017 study by the Insurance Research Council (IRC), 13% of drivers (or 1 out of 8!) are uninsured. That leaves us to wonder: How many more are underinsured and only purchasing state minimum? That’s why when you buy underinsured or uninsured motorist coverage, you need to match your liability policy — unlike liability policies that pay others, this is how you can pay yourself, guaranteed. Underinsured and UM coverage will also pay your family members, friends, and any other passengers who are injured in your vehicle at the time of the accident. Finally, we need to talk about automobile UM coverage and how that can affect bikers. The ultimate takeaway is to be VERY careful. Automobile UM coverage can help bikers but it depends on the ownership of the vehicle you’re on when an accident happens. While many motorcyclists include their bike on the same policy as their car, truck, and even home, some choose to have a completely different company insure their bike. This can mess with your coverage. While UM coverage typically follows you no matter what vehicle you’re in (even if you’re jogging down the road!), you should get your agent and read the fine print. At Sevenish Law Firm, we have a saying: The big print giveth, and the small print taketh away . When in doubt, call our firm, and we’ll be happy to give you detailed, personal advice.

EXPAND YOUR MIND IN 15 MINUTES!
5 New Skills You Can LearnWith a Busy Schedule
#2. Don’t be afraid to draw! In school, we were taught not to doodle in class. However, chances are that you don’t have your fourth grade teacher hovering over your shoulder anymore. Embrace drawing and learn to doodle a little bit every day. Drawing can be a peaceful break, and it can also come in handy throughout our personal and professional lives. #3. Read a couple of new recipes. Although being in the kitchen is an important step to being a good cook, you can learn new cooking techniques and flavor combinations by reading, too. Don’t hesitate to take a little time to expand your cooking skills through old-fashioned research and recipes. #4. Brush up on your online marketing. Understanding online marketing takes time and research, but through doing that research often and listening to podcasts from industry experts, you’ll catch on and likely benefit in nearly any industry you’re a part of. #5. Meditate! As mentioned before, doing nothing can be a valuable usage of your time, too. So why not meditate? Not only are there health benefits like improved blood circulation, but it may also help add more peace and energy into your day.
Everyone needs a chance to relax in their day, but sometimes, we waste precious (even if small!) opportunities to expand our skill set. If you’d rather learn new things in your spare time, here are five great ways to do just that. #1. Learn a new language. Admittedly, learning a new language is pretty intimidating, but you’d be surprised to know how much of being bilingual (or even trilingual) is merely consistency and practice. Pick up a language teaching app like Duolingo or an audiobook like Pimsleur and use it 15 minutes a day. Not only can a new language make a difference in your career, but it can also completely open up your world experiences.
From everyone at Sevenish Law, we hope these tips inspire you to spend a few more minutes on expanding your mind!

3 GREAT APPS to Maintain Your Mental Health at Home
Thankfully, there are a number of easy-to-use apps to help address this concern. Even if you’re pressed for time, these apps can help you maintain your mental health. And if you’re just looking for some simple resources to guide you through mood-boosting exercises, they’ve got you covered there too. Moodfit (GetMoodfit.com) Think of this app as a fitness tracker for your mind. The mood tracker allows you to record your moods and thoughts and follow trends and changes over time. You can look at these trends yourself or set the app to monitor specific areas of your mood. This highly customizable app is packed with tools and resources to help you with your mental health. In addition to the mood tracker, Moodfit offers a range of breathing exercises and a guide to mindfulness meditation. MoodMission (MoodMission.com) If you’re struggling with mental health issues, like anxiety and depression, you may feel like this free, evidence-based app was designed just for you. MoodMission asks you a series of questions to assess how you’re feeling, then suggests a series of
“missions” you can complete to help you get into a better state of mind. Missions are short, achievable tasks, like taking a walk around the block or cleaning up a room in your home. Of course, like all the apps listed here, it is not a replacement for professional mental health care, but it offers evidence-based exercises and a level of support that’s not often found in smartphone apps. Talkspace (Talkspace.com) While this app contains a number of mental health tools, its primary purpose is to connect you quickly with one of the company’s thousands of licensed and experienced therapists you can message on a regular basis. Unlike traditional therapy where you schedule an appointment and meet in person, Talkspace allows its user to communicate with their therapist through the app’s encrypted messaging system. It also allows you to request a check-in from your therapist and provides a place for them to upload your therapy notes. Talkspace is more costly than some other apps, but depending on your specific needs, it may be worth it.
