COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Honey Creek School House The Honey Creek school was built in 1921, and students starting learning there in January of 1922. It operated as a real school until 1945, and then the students were enrolled in Unionville School. In the early 1970's, citizens got together to raise money to fix it up, and they wanted to give people the opportunity to see what a one-room schoolhouse was really like. After a few years, they only opened it up for school field trips .

Students attend for most of a school day, and when they arrive, they are dropped off at the bottom of a long hill, and have to walk up to the school, where they will hear the bell ringing. They receive a tour around the outside, where they learn about things they will be using that day, such as the privies, the water pump to wash their hands, and where to find wood for the wood-burning stove. Learn about Honey Creek, one-room schoolhouses, and the expectations of using the supplies, and then the students are dismissed one at a time to hang their things up and find their desk with their names and grade level on it. After students get settled and go over some of the pioneer schoolhouse rules, take attendance, where kiddos have to stand up by their seat when their names are called and say, "present Maam!"

We sing a good morning song, recite the pledge, and practice manners, such as bowing and curtseying. Depending on the day and what the teachers request, students may do math problems on slates, or sometimes get to do rotations around the room to explore the pioneer toys, old photos, books, dress-up clothes, and games. Students wash their hands at the water pump and will eat lunch either outside or in, depending on the weather. Recess is next, where students learn how to use stilts, jump-ropes, and a hoop game. They also take turns swinging on a swing and help "beat the rug" with a rug beater to get all the dust off. It is such a memorable trip for students to “pretend” and go back to the year 1888 for school.
