even when a program is not optimized for Apple Pencil use. For example, the Apple Pencil will work for scrolling, swiping, tap- ping small buttons as well as typing with the on-screen key- board. There is also an on-screen keyboard available from the App Store called Swype (www.swype.com) that allows the us- ers to slide their finger or the Apple Pencil across the keyboard, passing over other letters, with a single, continuous move- ment, without lifting. This works very well with the Apple Pen- cil, speeding up typing and reducing the motor task required in lifting and tapping each individual letter. With upgrade to iOS13/iPadOS, this function is built in (called QuickPath) and can be done with the Apple Pencil and the Apple on-screen keyboard. ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS FOR THE APPLE PENCIL If the grip width or texture of the Apple Pencil is not com- fortable for a user with special grapho-motor needs, consider some of the following adaptations to enhance grip and writing positions:
Ztylus Apple Pencil Case and Ztylus Slim Apple Pencil Case (www.Ztylus.com)
ZTYLUS APPLE PENCIL CASE AND ZTYLUS SLIM APPLE PENCIL CASE (WWW.ZTYLUS.COM) These two cases for the Apple Pencil, available in white, black, plastic or aluminum, offer different sized grip options for users. They also have other features, such as a built-in clip which prevents the pencil from rolling away, and place to store the cap when the pencil is being charged. They also will pro- tect the pencil tip when the pencil is not in use.
TechMatte Apple Pencil Charging Adapters (www.techmatte.com)
TECHMATTE APPLE PENCIL CHARGING ADAPTERS (WWW.TECHMATTE.COM ) If you like plugging the pencil directly into the Lightning port at the base of the iPad but find the pencil angle difficult to use, these adapters provide options for charging. Remove the cap and insert your Apple Pencil’s Lightning connector into the TechMatte adapter and plug the other end of the TechMatte adapter into the iPad’s Lightning port. These adaptors come in two sizes: 3.5 inches long and 1 foot long. Each of these cables provides a more flexible connection between devices and even allows you to place the pencil on top of or beside the iPad dur- ing the charging, instead of having it stick out from the iPad. A 3 foot charging cable is also available and designed to charge the Apple Pencil with your current USB wall charger.
Plus Ergo for the Apple Pencil (www.plusergogrips.com)
PLUS ERGO FOR THE APPLE PENCIL (WWW.PLUSERGOGRIPS.COM)
The Plus Ergo is an ergonomically designed grip for the Ap- ple Pencil. It is made of soft silicon and is twice as wide as the Apple Pencil. It provides an option for users of the Apple Pencil who find it too thin to grip for writing.
