Clara thinks it would be hard to give up shows. After hearing that the others are getting a greater joy out of the new life, she joins them. It is well to remember that the members of the Cork Family were not saved be cause they left certain things behind, but because they received Christ. However, they needed to let Him deliver them from everything that was holding them back.

MAY 28, 1939 PAUL THINKS IN WORLD TERMS R om an s 1:1-17; 3:21-30; 5:1-11; 10:11-15
Abraham was saved as we are, by faith alone. The gospel of God is concerning His Son (vs. 3, 4 ). The Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, is both human and divine; He was made the son of David, but not made the Son of God; the latter He always was, Is, and shall be. Resurrection did not make Him the Son of God, as some teach, but it marked Him out as being the Son of God. Resurrection does not put sin away; it is merely the witness that sin has been put away. Again, there could be, and are, “gospels”—messages of good news—con cerning Him either as son of David, or Son of God, but the gospel o f God demands both in one Person, and that person is our Lord Jesus Christ Thus it is a full, plain, and pure gospel that is presented. The demand of the gospel is for the obedience of faith (v. 5 ), not the fulfillment of legal forms. Having believed the gospel, Christians find that they are beloved of God, "called saints.” They are not called because they are saints, but they are saints because called. It Is God’s calling, not the character of Christians, that makes them saints. While thanking God for the believers to whom he was writing, and while praying for them, the apostle expressed his desire to visit them that he might impart further enrichment in their knowledge of Christ, and have fellowship with them in the gos pel (vs. 6-13). II. T h e W orld ’ s D ebto r (14, 15) It appears that there were some among the Christians who felt that Paul was not willing to preach at Rome. But though this city was notoriously wicked, Paul was not afraid of Rome because, while he had nothing to take there except the gospel, he knew that the gospel had a power greater than any human power, a wisdom above all the learning of Rome, and grace sufficient to cover the sins of a thousand Romes. This was the gospel the Romans needed, and it is the gospel needed by the world BLACKBOARD LESSON
Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, . 2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holv Scriptures,) , 3 Concerning nis Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; . 4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: 5 Bv whom we have received grace and apostlesnip, for obedience -to the faith among all nations, for his name: 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: 7 To all that he in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lora Jesus Christ. 8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of through out the whole world. ■•; 9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; 10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may he established; 12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. 13 Now I would not have vou ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposesa to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. 14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. 15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that beiieveth; to the Jew first, and also the the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God^re vealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Lesson Text: Rom. 1:1-17 Golden Text: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that be iieveth” (Rom. 1:16). Devotional Reading: Rom. 15:1-13. Outline and Exposition I. T he W orld ' s H ope (1-13) P AUL thought in world terms because he had a gospel suited to all men. This gospel was "the gospel of God”; It had its origin in God’s love and mercy, and contained the good news that Jesus Christ came to this earth because God loved the world. The idea that Christ in duced the Father to love the world is a direct denial of the essential deity of Christ (cf. John 3:16; 1 John 4:10; Rom. 5:6-10). This gospel was promised by God through the prophets (v. 2) and, in the coming of Christ, that promise was fulfilled. In both the Old and New Testament the call is for faith in what Another has done, and this is the only way of salvation.
