and the blood o f Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin" (1 John 1:7). Did you think you could get victory by self-effort, by your own trying, even by your prayers, by your remorse, by your penitence, by your tears, by any way you can think of or manufacture? My friend, there is only one way, and that is fellow ship with Christ, so that the blood of the Lord Jesus, washes you clean. Do you know that experimentally? Would you go out and experience that as your daily por tion?—A. L indsay G legg . "Thou, O Lord, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation” (Lam. 5:19). No mood of feeling, form of thought, Is constant for a day; But Thou, O Lord, Thou changest not: The same Thou art alway. Let me no more my comfort draw From my frail hold on Thee; In this alone rejoice with awe— Thy mighty grasp of me. — S elected . MAY 6 The Beautiful One "Yea, he is altogether lovely" (Cant. 5:16). He is the altogether Holy One, beautiful in His approachableness. Yes, beautiful in that tireless patience; never too weary in body to minister to some poor Samaritan whose soul is sad and sin-stained: beauti ful at every moment, beautiful viewed from every angle. But, oh, there is one beauty above all that makes Him the chiefest among ten thousand, and the Altogether Lovely One, and it is just this, that He is so absolutely suitable. He is God’s answer to every need in my soul. — C o lin C . K err . "Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the G od o f my salvation: on thee do I wait all the day" (Psa. 25:5). W e dare not choose the pathway for ourselves. W e cannot trust to our own judgment. We know that self and self-in terest will warp our judgment. W e delude ourselves into thinking that we are doing God’s will when we are only serving our selves. So, like the Psalmist, we go back, and we throw ourselves in a new abandon upon God . . . When I turn to Him my soul is all hushed into silence before the awe, and the wonder, and the glory of the living God.—W . W . C a sh . MAY 2 Perilous Desires "Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires o f thine heart” (Psa. 37:4). It is always our peril when we hunger for place more than character: for position more than for disposition; for a temporal sceptor more than for a majestic self-con trol. W e want to be great and prominent; the Lord wants us to be pure and good. — J. H. JOWETT. My hands were filled with many things, Which I did precious hold As any treasure of a King’s, Silver, or gems, or gold. The Master came and touched my hands, The scars were in His own, And at His feet my treasures sweet Fell shattered one by one; "I must have empty hands,” said He, "Wherewith to work My works through thee.” — S elec ted . MAY 3 The Throne of Your Life “The Jebusites . . . spake unto David, saying. Thou shalt not com e in hither, but the blind and the lame shall turn thee aw ay . . . Nevertheless David took the strong hold.” (2 Sam. 5:6, 7, R.V., margin). They said: “W e are so strongly en trenched, even the blind and the lame can hold this citadel against David and his hosts." But they could not . . . You have got some old Jebusites, it may be, that have had dominion. Will you let the Lord 1e King to come in and occupy the throne in its entirety? He will deal with the Jebusites, they will be driven out, and you will see them again no more forever. Are you will ing to let the Lord occupy the throne? Then tell Him that you are willing to come to Him now in full and glad surrender. — W . H . A ldis . Hus It Justified the Faith of Its Founders? Many men and women have been in tensely interested in the vital educational experiment begun nearly seventeen years ago at Stony Brook. For those who have watched the development of Stony Brook, prayed for it, helped it financially, and recommended it to parents of boys, here are some interesting facts: (1) Stony Brook’s work is approved by the highest accrediting agencies in this region— the MSddle States A ssocia tion of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the New Y ork State Board of Regents. Graduates each year enter a dozen different colleges on certificate. (2 ) A t Columbia University a grad uate student, in surveying the private school field, selected twenty-five leading institutions for study. The list, approved by the University, included such nation ally known schools as Lawrenceville, Exeter, Andover, Milton, Hill, Groton, St. (3 ) Stony Brook has been providing boys with a CHRISTIAN education. The results cannot be put into statistical form, but the visitor to Stony Brook finds an atmosphere that is different, and scores of parents who have entrusted their boys to Stony Brook's care have ex pressed to the HEADMASTER their ap preciation of the spiritual uplift their boys have received. Stony Brook wishes every Christian leader and Christian parent to be fam iliar with its work. The 1939 catalogue and other infor mation will gladly be sent upon request. Please address . • .
