deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Lk. 9:23). Are we willing to submit our lives to the searching light of Christ's words, that chal lenge us to a holy life, different in quality from the worldly, selfish standards with which we have been too often content? Dare we face Mount Calvary with its lonely crosses, His cross and mine, that it may be "no more I, but Christ that lives in me”? . . . If so, we may go forth not counting on our own strength but on the glorious strength of the risen Christ. —H. E a rn sh aw S m ith .

in law is a God against me, but a God in Christ is a God with me and for me. Oh, beloved ones, do you know anything of this? Can you say "my God”—that God is your God in all the opulence of His di vine and essential nature and glory of His love and grace!— J. D en h am S m it h . MAY 9 Beloved of God "T o all that be in Rome, beloved o f God, called to be saints” (Rom. 1:7). Note that while God loved the whole world, it is the saints who are called the “beloved of God." They are His house hold, His dear children. Sinners should believe that God loved them and gave His Son for them: but saints, that they are the "beloved of God.” The unsaved are never named God’s "beloved.” A man, even, may, and should, love his neighbors: but his wife and children are “his beloved.” — W illiam R. N ew el l .

MAY 10 With Christ

"And Jesus said unto him. Verily I say unto thee, T oday shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Lk. 23:43). One of the old martyrs said to his per secutors as they were leading him to death: "You take a life from me that I cannot keep, and bestow a life upon me that I can not lose.”—D. L. M oody . MAY 11 “He Careth for You” "Casting all your care upon him” (1 Pet. 5 :7 ). "Cast not aw ay therefore your confi dence" (Heb. 10:35). It is God’s will that I should cast

MAY 8 My God

" God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them " (2 Cor. 5:19). A God in nature is a God above me, for who by searching can find out God—His works any more than Himself? . . . A God

All care on Him each day: He also bids me not to cast My confidence away.
