This former industrial area in northern Milan takes its name from a time when it was separated from the rest of the city, isolated by railway lines. Today, Isola is a vibrant up-and-coming district that has maintained its roots as a working-class area. The district was revamped as part of a modernisation project that started in 2009 and included nearby Porta Garibaldi and Porta Nuova . It’s home to traditional trattorie , trendy cafés, cocktail bars, elegant boutiques and
vintage shops. Biking aficionados flock here to enjoy Europe’s first moto-district, an entire street dedicated to motorbikes, with garages, shops, bars, motorcycles and themed events taking place year-round. With its mesmerizing eco-sustainable wall fountains and solar panels, Piazza Gae Aulenti epitomises Milan’s contemporary urban landscape and stands at the foot of the tallest building in Italy, the Unicredit Tower . The district’s most famous building is probably
the Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest), a telling example of urban reforestation and architecture that supports native biodiversity. The project was thought up by Boeri Studio, and has today become a symbol of Milan, with two residential towers home to roughly 1000 different plant species. A short walk from the Centro Direzionale business district is the Monumental Cemetery, a fascinating open-air museum with impressive sculptures and intricately decorated tombs.
