The Tragic RAF Plane Crash of 1937: A Wartime Sacrifice

Not all of Royal Street’s history is filled with triumph. On 6th December 1937, tragedy struck when an RAF Double Wing Hawker Audax plane collided with the steeple of the Everton Valley Presbyterian Church, located on Royal Street, due to heavy fog. The crash caused widespread destruction, obliterating houses on nearby Globe Street and Everton Valley. The young pilot, Gordon Dutton Angus, aged just 20, lost his life in the accident. He was training for the impending Second World War, and his death remains a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless young men who served their country.
