Work with Philippa Renshaw to create your own custom design that she will embroider onto a garment of your choice in her San Francisco studio, using a thoughtful mix of repurposed and premium materials. Studio Renshaw centers its creative practice around the use of a hand-guided industrial sewing machine to produce unique embroidered artworks. Each embroidery is created using a JUKI industrial zig zag sewing machine with a free-motion technique. The fabric is stabilised within a wooden embroidery hoop and manually guided under the needle, allowing for precise, controlled movement in any direction.

Purchase a duet of original Siri Berg artworks and Zoom chat with the artist's son, Arthur, to learn more about Berg's contribution to modernism and American Abstraction. Berg taught Color Theory at Parsons School of Design for over 30 years and was featured in the book “ 100 New York Painters ” (by Cynthia Maris Dantzic, Schiffer Publishers). She was a long-time member of the American Abstract Artists. Prominent public collections include The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; New York University, New York; Gray Art Gallery, NYU, Stockholm, Sweden; among others. Siri Berg lived and worked in New York City ’ s SoHo district until her death in 2020.

SASHIKO WORKSHOP at SCRAP with Lisa Solomon

Sashiko - which translates to little stabs - is an embroidery technique developed in the Edo period in Japan. It became not only a decorative practice, but one that was used to mend and repair clothing. In this workshop mixed media artist, author, and educator Lisa Solomon will demonstrate how give your clothes a new life and extend their use. The class will provide a quick overview of supplies and techniques - including interior and exterior patchwork as well as ways to incorporate traditional sashiko patterning from simple to more complicated designs. Participants will also be encouraged to reflect their own personalities in the way they mend. Bring a garment that needs to be fixed! There will also be materials to practice with. From a family of makers, Aiko Cuneo worked for over 35 years with teachers, students and families as a teaching artist in San Francisco schools and various organizations. She combines a variety of materials to make two and three-dimensional constructions. Enjoy a unique look at her process and her “ paintings ” , which have a distinct sculptural presence, resulting in a visceral mirroring of the dynamic ecosystems and natural processes that surround us and continuously unfold. Working with clay, water, and colored pigment, Mattes allows her materials to seep into the canvas base, utilizing gravity to create stunning geological effects, alluvial patterns, and tidal forces. Also tour the studio and work of one of the preeminent members of the California Clay Movement, Stephen De Staebler. He is credited with sustaining the figurative tradition in the postwar era. This is an opportunity to own an amazing quilt from the collection of Roderick Kiracofe, an expert on American quilts. In addition, this experience includes an exclusive visit to Roderick ’ s studio in Petaluma, where you can open and view museum-quality quilts. The pattern on the quilt is often referred to as “ Baseball ” or “ Fireball, ” but we don't know what the maker called it. The dealer/picker I purchased it from referred to it as "Blood Red Moons." It was purchased in Alabama from an African American family by the last name of Wright. Unfortunately, Roderick wasn ’ t given the maker ’ s name, and they remain unknown.

Influenced by patterns in nature, the blues of sea and sky, and the radial symmetry of stained glass windows and sound vibrations, these works reference micro/macro, lens and mandala. Michelle Mansour ’ s work explores the space between science and spirituality. An Egyptian-American artist based in Oakland, Mansour has exhibited work at the deYoung Museum, Bedford Gallery, and SLATE among others.
