History Around
Every Corner
Greer's Depot Since the first post office was in the train station, the postmark read “Greer’s Depot.” On March 25, 1876, with 15 votes, the town was incorporated as “Greers.” Textile mills, such as Victor, Apalache, Franklin, and Greer Mill, were important to the town’s development. Agricultural products, especially peaches, were grown and shipped out of state. When the Jones Brothers began to can peaches and tomatoes, the Greer label appeared on grocery shelves across the nation. Toads on Trade was originally started in 2009 by downtown restaurant owner Jason Clark along with the help of his sister. The scavenger hunt featured nine toads throughout Historic Greer Station. Upon completion of the Downtown Greer Streetscape Project, Kelsi Kenmore re-established the program. At the age of 10, Kelsi expanded the program to 16 locations. Each toad has a back story that ties into Greer's history.
