Adds Barton, “This is the fourth machine we’ve pur- chased from Koenig & Bauer, going back to the Planeta we bought in the 1980s, so we’re very familiar with the com- pany. But technology has improved greatly since then and we wanted to look at competing large-format machines, so we traveled to Germany and in ten days visited three manufacturers at their factories. “We had a long list of technical questions for Koenig & Bauer’s people and even rented a meeting room at a near- by hotel so we would have time to discuss everything on our agenda. We started in the early afternoon and planned

We still weren’t done, so we brought in food and ended up staying until 10 p.m.,” says Barton. “Koenig & Bauer’s people answered every technical ques- tion we had. “All three manufacturers make good presses, but at the end of day, we decided to go with Koenig & Bauer and haven’t looked back. We at Zumbiel did the site prep work then Koenig & Bauer crews came in and did the install and got the machine up and running on time. It was the best start up I’ve been around, as far as machinery goes,” says Barton, who also notes that since the machine’s start-up, Zumbiel Packaging has not needed to experience a ser- vice call. In fact, the company “religiously” performs PMs on every piece of equipment in the plant, which includes two litho presses, two flexo presses, a digital press, four die cutters, and 13 folder gluers. The machinery runs 24/7 on four 12-hour shifts per week.
