Coalition Tackles Flexible Recycling by Greg Kishbaugh

A coalition of Minnesota companies is working to expand recycling infrastructure for flexible films. The collabora- tion, called MBOLD, aims to support the circular economy for flexible packaging in the Upper Midwest and increase the availability of post-consumer recycled (PCR) resins. MBOLD members involved in the project include Blue Buffalo’s par-

In 1978, as part of expanding the company’s stationery product range, Sahni set up a 20-inch coater to man- ufacture self-adhesive BOPP tapes — one of the first to do so in India. Continuous Improvement Making use of his BSc Chemistry background, Sahni used the Wel- don laboratory to research devel- opment of new products including inks, adhesives and coatings. At

The group will work with film recycler Myplas USA, Inc. and film manufacturer Charter Next Generation to expand region- al recycling infrastructure and applications for PCR resins.

the life cycle benefits of plastics, including a 65 percent reduction of energy used, a 59 percent re- duction in water consumption, and a 71 percent reduction in global warming potential compared to virgin plastics. Plastic recycling organizations, brands and local stakeholders will also provide financial support to Myplas for the development of its recycling facility in Rogers. Multi-million-dollar debt financing will be provided by The Alliance to End Plastic Waste and Closed Loop Partners, and the Minnesota De- partment of Employment and Economic Develop- ment will provide $1 million through the Minnesota Investment Fund and $450,000 from the Minnesota Job Creation Fund. Silver Fox Installs Nilpeter FB-Line Silver Fox Ltd., reportedly the UK’s only car- bon-negative manufacturer of cable labels, has ac- quired its first Nilpeter printing press, an FB-Line complete with a UV-LED system. The company develops, manufactures, and sup- plies cable, wire, and equipment labeling solutions used in a wide range of industrial sectors around the world.

As part of the initiative, MBOLD members have invested in a flexible film recycling plant in Rog- ers, Minnesota, which will be established by Myplas USA. Slated for completion in the first half of 2023, the 170,000-square-foot facility will use mechanical recycling methods to recycle an estimated 90 mil- lion pounds of low- and high-density polyethylene packaging films per year. General Mills, Schwan’s Company and Charter Next Generation led a combined $9.2 million equi- ty investment in the new Myplas facility, which was also supported by Target and Ecolab. The facility is expected to employ 300 people at full capacity. Aside from the production of PCR resins for re- use in a variety of new packaging products, the partnership aims to curb plastic waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by extracting value from otherwise wasted flexible films. According to MBOLD, between 12 billion and 15 billion pounds of flexible packaging and films are used in the United States per year across a wide range of industries. It is estimated that only 5 per- cent of these flexible films are recycled each year, with the rest winding up in landfills, the environ- ment, or being incinerated. According to The Association of Plastic Recyclers, recycled polyethylene or PCR resins can improve

this time he also ventured into industrial adhesives, plastic blow molding and injection molding. With demand for self-adhesive stickers starting to take off in India through the 1970s, in 1978 Sahni invested in a siliconizing line, developing and pro- ducing poly-coated release liners and later a barrier coating for uncoated woodfree or brown sack kraft papers that could accept silicone release coating. In the late 1990s a one-meter coater was installed to carry out both silicone coating and to produce release liners, and in 1997 Weldon started manufac- turing self-adhesive labelstock, soon adding anoth- er coater to focus on liner manufacture. On The Move With the dawn of the 2000s, Sahni moved the business from coating tin catalyst-based silicone chemistry to a solvented platinum catalyst system and then on to solventless silicone coating — a line which is still in use. In 2003 Sahni set up the first Nordson Hotmelt adhesive coating line in India. The global recession of 2008 led to Sahni reduc- ing dependence on manufacturing and setting up as India agent for leading global manufacturers of print and converting equipment, tooling and consumables. In the late 1990s Sahni welcomed the entry of Av- ery Dennison to India, recognizing that this would help drive development of the entire Indian label converting industry. This also pushed Sahni into developing export markets, and Weldon was soon selling to more than 30 countries. In 2001 Sahni became involved in helping his friend Anil Arora establish the India Label Show, which Tarsus Group purchased in 2007, when it be- came Labelexpo India. Labelexpo Pioneer Weldon became the first Indian labelstock manu- facturer to exhibit at Labelexpo Europe and also in this decade Sahni became the first Indian national to be on a FINAT committee, and he was a judge for the World Label Awards multiple times. Sahni sits on the board of directors of the Label Manufacturers Association of India (LMAI) and has curated, along with the LMAI team, many events bringing together label printers, suppliers and print buyers. Sahni was part of the LMAI delegation to meetings of the L9 group of global label associa- tions, with LMAI hosting an L9 meeting in India in 2018. In 2017 the LMAI conferred upon Sahni the award for Lifetime support to the Indian Label Industry.

Amcor has unveiled a product rebrand reportedly designed to give customers a more holistic view of its growing portfolio of more sustainable packaging. The redesign highlights three key differentiating benefits for customers: the advanced technologies in more sustainable packaging; product functional- ity and differentiation for high-growth market seg- ments such as healthcare, dairy, and protein; and performance characteristics across a wide range of material options. Sustainable Technologies Amcor has brought a significant number of sustain- able technologies to the market, with benefits rang- ing from the materials from which the products are made to what happens after their use. All packag- ing options with more sustainable features are now identified with the new Amcor EcoGuard brand. The initiative further complements Amcor’s re- cently announced investments in platforms such as AmFiber, and AmLite, as well as more sustainable and differentiated options in growing markets such as healthcare, protein, pet food and coffee.

From the concept outlines submitted, 17 were selected to continue to the development phase. MCC Partners With Sol For Sun-Activated Labels Born under the Mexican sun in 1899, Sol is a brand with a strong heritage and a close association with sunshine. It is only natural that the beer in- corporates solar energy into its production process. The sun has always been the heart and soul of Sol and now it is able to harness its power. Following the installation of 9,212 solar panels on the roof of Zoeterwoude brewery in the Netherlands, solar power plays an important role in the production process of Sol. This is a milestone in the brand’s journey to reducing carbon emissions and becom- ing more sustainable. Brand owner Heineken partnered with MCC Cwmbran, UK, in search for a solution to communi- cate this important initiative to its consumers. With its strong link to the sun, the team at MCC had the solution in its photochromic label.

U.S Plastic Recycling Rates Drop

The United States in 2021 had a recycling rate of about 5 percent for post-consumer plastic waste, down from a high of 9.5 percent in 2014, when the United States exported millions of tons of plas- tic waste to China and counted it as recycled, even though much of it wasn’t, according to a new re- port from Research and Markets. The first problem is that there are thousands of kinds of plastics, each with its own characteristics. They all include different chemical additives and colorants that cannot be recycled together, making it impossible to sort the trillions of pieces of plas- tics into separate types for processing. High-den- sity polyethylene (HDPE#2), polyvinyl chloride (PVC#3), low-density polyethylene (LDPE#4), poly- propylene (PP#5), and polystyrene (PS#6) all must be separated for recycling. Also plastics include toxic additives and absorb chemicals, and are generally collected in curb-side bins filled with possibly dangerous materials such as plastic pesticide containers. Finally, plastic recycling is simply not economical; it costs more to recycle than to make new plastic. Burning or banning plastic might be the only ways to reduce plastic waste. TLMI Announces Calls For Submissions For Print Awards TLMI has announced that the 2022 Print Awards competition is now open for submissions. This year marks the association’s 45th Print Awards Competi- tion and winners will be announced and celebrated at the TLMI Annual Meeting taking place October 16-18 at the Arizona Grand Resort & Spa in Phoe- nix, Arizona. Graphic Packaging Showcased For Sustainability The commitment of Graphic Packaging Interna- tional to sustainability and to supporting the cir- cular economy is the focus of a new documentary. The short film reflects upon the fiber-based con- sumer packaging provider’s participation in an ini- tiative called Vision 2045. A project conceived to celebrate the centenary of the United Nations, Vision 2045 entails 50 global businesses joining forces. Amongst its key objectives, the project aims to demonstrate how both organiza- tions and individuals can take collective action to ensure a better future for society and the planet. The initiative has been aligned to 2045 — when the UN celebrates its 100th anniversary — because it is hoped that by this year the UN Global Compact and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will have become woven into the fabric of everyday life for everyone across the planet. The new film features a number of personnel from Graphic Packaging including Mike Doss, President and CEO, Elizabeth Hargrave, VP Global Quality, Michelle Fitzpatrick, VP & Chief Sustainability Offi- cer, and Ricardo De Genova, Senior VP, Global In- novation & New Business Development. Collectively, they offer personal insight into the company’s holistic approach to advancing product sustainability and driving change in reducing end consumer waste while conserving resources. This includes using recycled input materials, developing products for optimum recyclability, and ensuring any virgin raw materials employed by the business come from renewable, sustainably managed sources. The film showcases Graphic Packaging’s focus on innovation. The provider of fiber-based packag- ing solutions knows that without innovation there can be no progress and continues to pioneer new advances in areas including material science and packaging design to safeguard the planet for the sake of future generations. The launch of the new documentary is just the latest activity from Graphic Packaging as part of the Vision 2045 initiative. Previously, key members of the company attended a three-day summit that ran alongside the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). This event brought together business leaders, UN delegates, government offi- cials, and journalists for a series of panel discus- sions which followed the themes of the 17 Sustain- able Development Goals.
