Al Jazeera Tells its Story: In-Depth Studies

This tripartite division remains procedural, that is mainly for ana- lytical and interpretative purposes. Looking at the Al Jazeera-audience relationship as being a dynamic and organic interaction, this division helps us highlight the major objectives of Al Jazeera as follows: It is an awareness-promoting project that equips the audience with true news and necessary knowledge, which could, in certain circum- stances, bring about a much-awaited sociopolitical change in the Arab World. As for the methodology, this study adopts a “systemic approach” (1) that looks at Al Jazeera as a ‘special media and political phenomenon in the modern and contemporary Arab context, involving key issues, overlapping relations, and specific conditions. These elements consti- tute the subject of the above-mentioned tripartite equational logic that defines the Al Jazeera-audience relationship” (2) . Based on the domes- tic-foreign dialectics, and looking at the internal structure of the studied phenomenon as it interacts with its functional environment and general context in which it was born, the systemic approach is the most suitable methodological approach. This methodology will take us through the following three analytical levels: Theory : this is where notions, epistemological concepts, and re- search papers that have addressed the phenomena of Al Jazeera and its influence on the Arab audience are investigated. And particularly, how crucial the audience can be to the media content to bring about the desired change across each of the tripartite division. In this respect, we will focus on the major issues in each level to see how interactive the Arab audience has been in this regard. Practice : here, we will examine the quality of media practices that have distinguished Al Jazeera’s performance throughout these stages in terms of reporting, coverage quality and programme material produced during each stage.
