Al Jazeera Tells its Story: In-Depth Studies

Philip Seib’s “The Al Jazeera Effect” (1) . Published in 2008, this book investigates the impact of the global media on international politics, especially in the context of the ongoing information technology revo- lution. To illustrate this global impact, the author uses Al Jazeera as an example. Back in 2004, Mohamed El-Oifi published a research piece with the same title “The Al Jazeera Effect” (2) , but did not attract as much attention as Seib’s book, probably because of the limitations posed by the French language, in which the piece was written. Later in 2010, Megan Zingarelli concluded a master thesis comparing the effects of Al Jazeera and CNN in global politics and international community (3) . The same year, another book was published by Augusto Valeriani, bearing the same title as Seib’s, “the Al Jazeera Effect” in which he analysed the Network’s role in shaping inter-Arab relations and influencing the transformations in contemporary Arab media systems (4) . For his part, Tal Samuel-Azran investigated what he considered to be evidence of Al Jazeera’s effect in the United States (5) . Scott Bridges addressed Al Jazeera’s presence and impact in Australia through partnerships with local and national Australian broadcasters (6) . In terms of curricula and theories, some studies touched on Al Jazeera’s influence in media stud- ies by challenging the prevailing theoretical frameworks regarding the role of the media. In this context, Magdalena Wojcieszak laid out some challenges concerning the possibility of applying the “framing” theory (1) Phillip Seib, The Al Jazeera Effect: How the New Global Media Are Reshaping World Politics , (Potomac Books, 2008).
