Fall 2024

5784: The year in pictures E ven by the harsh standards of Jewish history, this has been one of the more difficult years. As with many other kinds of grief, it has come in waves: first in process- ing the severity of Hamas’s unprecedented attack on civilians, and then in grappling with the war Israel launched in response. In Canada, this has unfolded against the backdrop of renewed support for Israel from some quarters, a rise in antisemitism in others, and increased attention across the board. Over the last year, Canadian Jews have been in mourning, afraid, angry, deter- mined, recommitted, questioning, in solidarity, and sometimes also at odds with one another—often several of these at once. No collection of images can capture the full range and complexity of Jewish experi- ences over the past 12 months. But at this moment in the calendar—which is always an occasion for contemplation and, this year, also a terrible yahrzeit—we wanted to create some space to remember and reflect on what we have, individually and collectively, been going through.

In hope of better days ahead,
