The pastry chef was inspi- red by her great grandmother’s old babka recipe cards, and her debut cookbook, With Love and Babka , promises to make you a “babka master” with its 50 different takes on the beloved dessert. The flavours range from dulce de leche to tomato pesto, and the doughs from butter-blocked to gluten- free. There seems to truly be a babka for everyone in here.
Sabor Judío: The Jewish Mexican Cookbook Ilan Stavans and Margaret E. Boyle (The University of North Carolina Press, October 8) Mexican Jews Ilan Stavans and Margaret E. Boyle bring their cultural cuisine into your kitchen with over 100 recipes for Shabbat, holidays, and every other day of the year. In the book, Stavans and Boyle detail the history of Jewish history in Mexico from 1492 to present day and explore how Ash- kenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi, and converso women shaped Mexican-Jewish cuisine. A few of their recipes that we’re particularly excited to try: latkes with mole, chilaquiles with matzah instead of tortillas, and pobla- nos stuffed with guacamole and gribenes. A Sweet Year: Jewish Celebrations and Festive Recipes for Kids and Their Families Joan Nathan Knopf (November 19) The American Jewish cooking icon returns with an updated version of her famous co- okbook, A Sweet Year , filled with recipes for nine Jewish holidays. Nathan put together a new version to re- move less-fashionable recipes (pot roast) and replace them with more contemporary ones (tahini shakes!). But long-time fans needn’t fret: she kept in latke, challah, and kugel recipes. If you worry about passing on Jewish tradi- tions and foods to your grandchildren, this book provides explanations, child-friendly recipe tutorials, and crafts to explain the reasons behind the chagim.
