The Jay Pritzker Pavilion serves as the centerpiece of Chicago’s Millennium Park, and is among the world’s most technologically advanced outdoor concert venues. The 52,000 SF pavilion features a performance shell with 679 massive curving stainless steel panels that resemble flower petals and seats 4,000 patrons. The Walsh team oversaw the development and completion of conceptual design for the stainless steel cladding systems to support these panels. Sprawling outward from the pavilion stage is a high-tech sand-based lawn seating area which holds an additional 7,000 people. Walsh used structural steel with composite columns encased in concrete to form the pavilion’s complex structure, dividing the framing into 5 separate areas. The final design and engineering of the panel assembly involved heavy coordination between specialized subcontracting firms.
