This was H is Faith Compiled and edited by Jill Morgan The subtitle of this work, The Ex pository Letters of G. Campbell Mor gan, might have been a happier choice for the title. The famous ex positor’s daughter-in-law has ar ranged paragraphs from some two thousand letters into a commentary upon the following subjects: the Bible, the Church, Christian life and doctrine, death and the future state, the second coming of Christ, general and personal. These are subdivided into specific topics in the table of contents. The paragraphs are dated so that the reader can judge the effect of the passage of time during Dr. Morgan’s long lifetime — 1863- 1945. The work provides a valuable sup plement to the expository works of the author. It is characterized by his usual clear and incisive style com bined with a remarkable analytical power. The reader may be surprised at some of the theological positions frankly stated; for example, “I be lieve the Word of God teaches the awful possibility that even though we have received the gift of life, and have been made in the highest sense the sheep of His flock, we may lose the gift and pass back again into the nature.from which we were deliv ered.” “M y own position,. . . would be theologically described as that of Arminian rather than Calvinist.” 319 pages; cloth; Fleming H. Revell Co., Westwood, N. J., $3.50. THE DIVINE CONSTITUTION by Charles Zachariah Smith. 152 pages; cloth; DeVorss & Co., Los Angeles, Calif. THE MYSTERY OF CREATION by J. S. Thurs ton. 161 pages; cloth; Exposition Press, New York, N. Y., $3.00. These two volumes by Sauer were noticed in this section about a year ago when they first were published by Paternoster Press in England, and your reviewer rejoices in their ap pearance in an American edition. Their author is one of the leaders among the [Plymouth] Brethren in Germany, head of the Bible School at Wiedenest. His work is characterized by a pro found appreciation of the importance of the dispensational implications of the Word of God. The Dawn of World Redemption, subtitled A Sur vey of the History of Salvation in the Old Testament, carefully traces the unfolding of God’s ways with man in a fascinating manner. Carefully outlined as it is, the work easily enables the reader to assimi late and retain the truths presented. It would be impossible to overstate the freshness of approach and the vigorous style of this condensation of the Old Testament. Both the pulpit and the pew will welcome these two volumes. 206 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.; $3.00. This volume, subtitled A Survey of the History of Salvation in the New Testament, carries on the author’s work on the Old Testament reviewed above. The life and work of Christ, the church of the firstborn ones, and the doctrine of the last things are here presented in a format which challenges study and sustains inter est. Ninety outlines of Biblical mes sages are an unusual feature of the work. Scripture indexes would have enhanced the value of both books, but even without this aid they pro vide an invaluable Bible study tool. 207 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Grand Rapids, Mich., $3.00. S tories o f the H ym n s W e L o r e By Cecilia Margaret Rudin This attractive volume contains two and three page accounts of some 40 hymns and gospel songs written from the time of Martin Luther (1483-1546) to the present.
