TR U TH . . . O U T OF TH E EARTH continued from page 17 Finally, it may confidently be af firmed that the greatest contribution of the finds has been their attestation to the fidelity of transmission and reliability of the Biblical text of the Old Testament. Especially is this true with regard to the book of Isaiah, which is the only complete manuscript of any Biblical text from so early a date. It is older by sev eral centuries than any other manu script we possess of an Old Testa ment book in the Hebrew. It is thus an important aid in the determina tion of the original text of the proph ecy. Scholars have been impressed by the degree to which it agrees with our traditionally received Hebrew text. The Greek translation of the Old Testament has major additions as well as omissions, important dis locations, and notable disarrange ments of the text (witness the book of Jeremiah) in comparison with our standard text. This is not true of the Isaiah Scroll. Scholars have long praised the faithful work of the scholars who gave us our present .Hebrew text; the finds only serve to confirm this high estimate of their textual work. Though slight varia tions do occur in the Isaiah manu script, in no place has the manuscript filled an important lack in the Mas- oretic Text. A corollary to all this is the fact that scholars cannot af ford to be so careless, as was formerly true, in their glib emendations of the Biblical text. The emendation school can well take heed. Dr. W. F. Albright has put it pointedly: “ It cannot be insisted too strongly that the Isaiah Scroll proves the great an tiquity of the text of the Masoretic Book, warning us against the light hearted emendation in which we used to indulge.” Again we thank God that His Word standeth sure, and that again truth springeth out of the earth. continued from page 26 The Word of God is inexhaustible. It is a mine of wealth. We cannot exhaust it for it is not the word of man but it is the Word of God. Need I say to you that if we are to preach this Word, if we are to teach this Word, if we are to live these pre cepts, we must first study to show ourselves approved? Therefore, the first proposition is this, that God puts the emphasis upon this Book, and other things being equal He uses most those who love it and know it the best.
