My second proposition now fol lows. You, as students, are at present forming habits of study and thought which will attach themselves to your entire life and ministry. The late Bishop Taylor Smith as a young man took as his motto four words: “ As now, so then.” “ I took that motto to my heart,” he said, “ and made it a practice in my life. As now, if I am careless, prayerless, slack and lazy in my youth, so shall I be when I am older. As now, if I am careful, prayerful and studious while I am young, so shall I be increasingly as the days go by.” Did not his later years of fruitful service prove the value of that principle of self-dis cipline which he adopted in his early years? As we are now, so we shall be then. Spiritual Habits The consideration here is two fold — it is spiritual and it is men tal. Consider first our spiritual habits. If we establish now the daily pe rusal of the Word of God; if we daily, now, learn how to pray; if we make it our daily practice not to lose any good opportunity of witnessing for the Lord Jesus Christ, that prac tice will stay with us and will be of untold blessing in the years ahead. I believe with all of my heart, friends, that someday—not in this life, but in the life to come with the Lord Jesus Christ—someday we are going to look back over the course of the life we are now living with either joy or regret. We are going to see the race that we are now running, and I imagine that after we survey the entirety of our life, God (who has a divine plan for all of our lives) will then take His own divine blueprint (the life that He intended us to live) and will superimpose it over the life that actually we did live. We shall see how for awhile we followed the course of His will, and there was blessing and there was fruitage in our Christian life. And then we shall see how (because of carelessness, in difference, or outright sin) we wan dered from one side to the other, how we got out of the path of bless ing, how there was no expected Christian fruit. Someday, friends, we are going to look back over the course of this life with either joy or regret. I present to you that there is a life of no regret. It consists in daily doing the will of God, in being daily guided by Him, in living a God-ordered, Spirit-directed life. Let us look for just a moment at our mental habits.
