An update on lentil farming
Lentils have been grown around the globe since time immemorial. e seeds of these legumes are rich in protein and nutrients and originated in warm temperate regions such as Asia Minor, the Middle East, south- eastern Europe and central Asia. ey were one of the rst legumes to be domesticated some 9,000 years ago, at around the same time as wheat. Lentil production has grown in recent years, increasing from 2.1 million tonnes in 2002-2003 to 2.9 million tonnes in 2009-2010. Production has risen in Canada, the United States
and Australia, but it has been high- ly variable or has even declined in India, Bangladesh, Syria and Turkey. In the United States, production has increased signicantly since 2002, when lentils were included in the U.S. Farm Security loan program. Canada is the largest producer of green lentils, accounting for about 75 per cent of world production. is country also produced over a third of the world’s lentils in 2011 (1.5 million tonnes) and is the world’s leading exporter of lentils. e top four exporting countries
