CDSBEO trustees approve balanced budget for 2015-16
Lawyer Gerald Langlois back in court next week
Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario’s board of trustees has approved an operating budget of $165.9 million, and a capital budget of $4.2 million for the 2015-16 school year. Trustees approved the budget at the board meeting held June 16. Chair Brent Laton commended the group, «This budget will help ensure that the 2015-16 year will be another successful year. On behalf of the board of trustees, I extend my sincere gratitude for the work done by the executive council and the Finance Department.” Director of education Wm. J. Gart- land was pleased with the report. “The budget demonstrates that our staff continue to be dedicated to student success while remaining fiscally res-
ponsible with the Board’s financial resources. I commend all of our staff for their dedication in serving the best interests of our students. The work being done in schools and at the system level demonstrates our commitment to excellence in Catholic education.” Capital projects The Board will also receive $1.7 million for School Renewal, and $2.2 million for School Condition Impro- vement, to help address the backlog of facility repairs and upgrades. The 2015-16 financial estimates allow the board to continue to remain compliant with the provincially man- dated primary class size requirement as well as the aggregate class size requirements mandated for full-day kindergarten.
Hawkesbury lawyer Gerald Langlois will be back in L’Orignal court June 23, to res- pond to assault charges dating back to 2014 and January 2015. Gerald Langlois has two assault charges against him, one from September 2014, involving a woman, and other from Janua- ry 2015, involving the same person, both contrary to section 266 of the Criminal code of Canada. The lawyer is also accused of mischief by “wilfully breaking the cellphone” of said woman, contrary to section 430 (4) of the
Criminal code. Finally, Mr. Langlois is accused of sto- ring firearms, a handgun and two rifles, in a careless manner, contrary to section 86 (1) of the Criminal code. His next court date in L’Orignal’s Ontario Court of Justice is scheduled for June 23, at 1 p.m. Mr. Langlois is well known for pleading before the Supreme Court of Canada in 1980, in the key family law decision Pettkus V. Becker, a case that had a tremendous impact on family law and constructive trust.
Plusieurs escouades de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario ont fait une descente avecmandat sur la rue James à Hawkesbury, le 8 juin dernier, saisissant de lamarijuana et arrêtant du même coup trois personnes. Richard Quann, 42 ans, et Nancy Robert, 43 ans, ont été arrêtes pour possession demarijuana en vue d’en faire le trafic. Sébastien Quann, 19 ans, a également été arrêté pour la même raison lors de la descente, mais a aussi une charge de possession d’une autre substance contrôlée, soit de la résine demarijuana (hashish). Les trois accusés devront paser devant le juge à la Cour de L’Orignal le 5 août prochain pour répondre de leurs actes. (SL) Perquisition de drogue et arrestations
Fermeture de route à Saint-Eugène Le conseil de Hawkesbury Est a accepté unanimement de fermer une portion du chemin au coin de la route Concession 3, à la hauteur de la route du Comté 14, le 8 juin dernier. Depuis deux ans, la rue qui passe devant la vieille église est fermée l’hiver et le conseil a affirmé n’avoir jamais reçu de plaintes à ce sujet. À la suite de la fermeture définitive, les gens ne pourront plus tourner sur cette route, ils devront plutôt se rendre directement au panneau d’arrêt. Cette décision survient en raison du danger que représente cette partie de la route pour les automobilistes. Le conseil a aussi cité en exemple d’autres endroits où des chemins ont été fermés après l’ouverture d’un croisement, comme sur la route Concession 6. La fermeture n’entrera en vigueur que lorsque les formalitées juridiques seront terminés. Le conseil doit, entre autres, organiser une rencontre publique et en faire l’annonce dans les journaux. – Véronique Charron
