I n 2012, a group of friends and former co-workers for the Asymmetric Warfare Group created their own company, Red Six Solutions, a branch of Systems Planning Analysis (SPA). The goal was to help the U.S. military strategize and defend themselves from adversaries. Over time, the government began to struggle with the evolution of drones and proliferation of attacks, which sparked Red Six to pivot their operations. Some of the founders were pilots, meaning they could actually fly drones. Now, Red Six not only flies drones, but they also build and customize them to replicate what’s used by U.S. opponents.
On the ground, Red Six works with policymakers, discussing who can use drones and how they’re allowed to use them, as well as who can use weapons to defeat the drones and where. Customers range across the U.S. and partner governments, the drone defense industry, offices responsible for protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure, military bases, and U.S. ships and borders. Red Six even works within sports venues, where drone operators often conduct cyberattacks to steal a stadium’s worth of credit card information. Kirsten Fontenrose, Strategic Advisor for Red Six, described their team as “quirky,” with employees coming from myriad backgrounds – pilots, air marshals, FBI agents, and White House operations members. While their hub or “central nervous system” is in Alexandria, Virginia, they lease a drone building operation within St. John Properties’ Melford Town Center in Bowie,
Maryland. Fontenrose said they needed somewhere close to Washington, D.C., where their customers operate. The company also needed a space that could house both a warehouse and traditional office area. “We needed this wacky combination of both office space, like professional conferencing … we also needed high capacity for power, and we needed to have a warehouse space where we could just build.” They found the perfect space within a flex building, and St. John Properties helped Red Six customize the facility to fit these specific needs. The warehouse and office space are so partitioned that anyone visiting the office is likely unaware of the facility’s building operations area. “We love that – the ability to have a flow where we can give people tours of the whole thing, but also be able to have the fit-for-purpose sections of the office in one really well-designed space,” said Fontenrose.
“[St. John Properties] did all of the customization work for us, so it was fantastic. They literally customized it exactly to what we were looking for.” –Kirsten Fontenrose, Strategic Advisor, Red Six Solutions Fontenrose said St. John Properties’ property management team continues to go above and beyond, recalling one Christmas when a baseball shattered through their warehouse window. Even with the less-than-ideal timing of the holidays, St. John Properties fixed the window that same day. Working with them has made Red Six’s pertinent work easier and more efficient.
